Ketsbaia
But even if they finish 6th, isn't 5th place automatically in Europe anyway? The three Europa spots go to 5th, CC winners and FA Cup winner/runner-up. I might have confused myself here, sorry.

But if Liverpool finish 5th then their Europa spot from the Carling Cup is given to the 6th place team.
Ketsbaia
And then we'll get the FA Cup spot in 7th (if that goes to plan), regardless of Liverpool being 5th or 6th.

All 3 (if Spurs and Chelsea win their replays) are at home against opposition they should beat. Probably the biggest factor is going to be the draw after this round. Providing there will be at least 2 of them left, we need them to avoid drawing each other first and foremost..
Dave
The worst thing that could happen is if the FA Cup draw goes wrong, we finish 6th and get fuck all.
Dave
Btw if Man City or Man United win the Europa League this season and they also qualify for the Champions League, does that spot for defending it go to the league table as well? So theoretically 8th could be good enough if everything lines up?

Dave
Doesn't look like it: http://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/ The title-holder qualifies directly for the group stage of the Europa League. If the title holder already qualified for a qualifying round of the Europa League the total number of teams of that association does not change. The title holder spot in the Europa League is not used if the title holder qualified for the Champions League. The unused title holder spot and other empty spots are filled in the Europa League with priority for cup winners. So presumably the spot would be filled by a cup winner from a lower-ranked country or something.
Anderson
If we finish 7th, and both teams contesting the cup final have already qualified, we'd only need Liverpool to finish 6th or above wouldn't we?
Ashley17
So, FA cup, ideally we'll get Tottenham vs Everton & Chelsea vs Liverpool as a semi final line up - basically as long as two of Tottenham, Liverpool or Chelsea are in the final 6th (and 7th if Liverpool are top 6) is a Europa spot. The other permutation is if one of those teams doesn't finish top 4, as long as they win the FA cup the runners up won't get in, as they'll qualify for the Europa league via the league and the cup spot will therefore go to the league. For example, if Chelsea finish 5th but beat Everton in the FA cup final would not mean a Europa league place for Everton.

Doesn't that mean Everton get it? If the winners are already qualified for Europe, it goes to the runners up in the FA Cup.
Ryan
This is ridiculously confusing I think we'll finish 7th with Liverpool 6th and the FA Cup final will be contested by two teams in the top 4. That means we'd get Europa?

JH
Wikipedia but: If the winners have already qualified for the UEFA Champions League via the Premier League, the UEFA Europa League place goes to the FA Cup runners-up.[6] If the winners have also qualified for the Europa League through finishing fifth in the Premier League, the FA Cup runners-up do not qualify, with the sixth placed team in the league receiving the Europa League place

Ashley17
From last season - http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Explanation-of-which-teams-still-have-chance-of-qualifying-for-Europa-League-including-Manchester-City-Stoke-Tottenham-Liverpool-article727553.html The FA Cup will be won by either Manchester City or Stoke. City, however, want to qualify for the Champions League rather than the Europa League and will do so if they finish in the top four. If they do then Stoke can lose the cup final and still qualify for the Europa League as runners-up. But if City finish fifth then Stoke will have to win the FA Cup to qualify for Europe as if City lift the famous trophy they will go into the Europa League through the FA Cup, which takes priority. Therefore the FA Cup qualification slot would be deemed as filled by the winners, fifth place becomes irrelevant - and the door for the final Europa League place opens for the team in sixth, currently Liverpool. Ashley17
It's going to get very complicated later on in the season, games like Liverpool vs Chelsea (second last game) could have a huge effect on us. Teams going in and out of the top 4 and how that effects us - let's just hope a non-top 6 club doesn't make it to the FA cup final and keep it simple! All makes sense now. So basically as well as cheering on the top 3 left in the cup, it's also in our best interests that Arsenal finish above Chelsea and Liverpool. What if the cup final is Liverpool vs Everton and Liverpool have finished 6th? I'm guessing FA Cup > League Cup; therefore, if Liverpool win they'll take the FA Cup spot and their League Cup spot is passed onto the league (7th place)? I guess this scenario would also work if Liverpool finish 7th, and we finish 6th.
