After recent seasons of finishing 13th, 12th, 18th, 16th etc. I don't quite get the furore about finishing in and around 8th.

What is the point in finishing 8th? What are we aiming for? I want a goal for the club that doesn't revolve around just existing in the Premier League. Are we trying to get European competition and push on from there? If there was a goal beyond this season, I'd be more than happy finishing 8th, but there isn't. Finishing 8th is what we're striving to do. Do well without daring to get ourselves involved in European competition. Yay. So exciting.

Not sure why this is happening in this thread like.

It's quite ironic because 8th is actually a pretty good finish by the standards of our past decade. Like you said it's just that there isn't any obvious aspiration beyond that.

Sports clubs survive by getting their supporters hooked on hope and there's not a whole lot of hope being sold to us at the moment.

Nail on the head, what is a team without aspirations or direction? A soulless shell of meaninglessness! We watch football to find excitement in the monotony of life, for inspiration and entertainment. Once you start taking that hope, aspiration and direction away and settle for existence, you take all that away and that escapism is lost with it.

Is it pronounced De Jong or De Jong? If it's De Jong we could use Inner Circle's Sweat as his song.

De Jong De Jong De Jong

De Jong De Jong De Jong Jong

De Luuk De Jong.

Transfer News: Newcastle want Luuk de Jong done by next week

Sky sources understand Newcastle United want to complete the signing of Dutch international striker Luuk de Jong before Tuesday's Premier League clash with Norwich City.

However, whilst they are pushing the de Jong deal along - they may have to wait until the following Saturday and the Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland before they are able to include him.

Newcastle have been lining up de Jong on loan since late last year, but his club Borussia Monchengladbach had been considering their options, but the Magpies now look set to get their man before the window closes next week.

The future of Papiss Cisse remains subject of speculation. He has been linked to Gladbach as part of the de Jong deal, whilst the likes of West Ham and Cardiff have also been linked - together with sides from the Middle East.

Turkish club Besitkas have stated their admiration for the player but sources close to Newcastle have told us that they are not looking to sell and if somebody did want him then the club would want to recoup the £9million they paid.

And also Newcastle are aware that with Shola Ameobi out of contract this summer, even if de Jong came in - that would be of their four strikers including Loic Remy - only Cisse would be contracted beyond the end of the season.

Newcastle still hope to conclude a deal for Remy on a full time basis and de Jong's move will be with a view to a permanent, but neither of those would be done until the end of the season.
