Manchester City 4 - 0 Newcastle United - 30/03/13 - post-match reaction from p34

Recommended Posts

People saying he's been a bit of a mixed bag must only be fussed about results and nowt else then I presume?

Results are the ultimate determiner though, as Icke said.

Right, but he isn't getting any results this season. 31 games, 33points..

Aye, last season being 65 from 38, hence the 'mixed bag' summary. (:anguish:)

I'm not discussing last season, I'm discussing this season and how people keep on blaming injuries as the sole reason. I love how some say Stoke should go down because of the way they play when they themselves only care about results...

There's so much double standards in this forum sometimes it's ridiculous.

Right, well you're discussing another point really then.

I said: "on the whole, Pardew has been 50% good, 50% bad (in his whole time here)."

Polic said (I'm assuming in response to that): "you're saying he's a mixed bag purely on his results, then?"

I said: "yes."

He was good last season, bad this - so we should judge him about half-way into next, providing he gets the funds he deserves in the summer. It's a simple way of looking at things but that's just how I see it.

I'm personally not interested in watching that sort of football every week, that's just me though and I obviously don't speak for the whole support. Life's too short to waste your time watching it on telly, travelling to games to be subjected to it, etc.

He managed to play some decent stuff for 5 or 6 games last year then abandoned it, presumably because it wasn't him.

Fair enough  Missed that, sorry about the misunderstanding, and I do agree. I might be a tad harsh, but I was along with Mick (pretty sure it was Mick) a big criticizer of Pardew even last season.

This is exactly my feeling. I just don't enjoy the way we play, and that's why I don't watch Italian football. It was fun last season winning games but some games were just horrendous to watch even last season.

Bar a few brainfarts, he set the team up in a way that was incredibly difficult to beat. As a team consolidating its position in the division, that was a great place to start - and we gathered momentum from that.

The 19 wins/8 draws were: ugly at times, unspectacular at others, wonderful occasionally. That got us 5th place and I agree with Icke when he says we didn't fluke it, and Pardew deserved absolutely masses of credit. Aye there were frustrating times but it was a brilliant season.

His performance this season has been the polar opposite - and as bizarre as it is disappointing... especially given the way he injected an authority about us last year.

There have been mitigating factors that have excused him for one or two things - one massive issue being that he didn't get the funds he deserved before the season started.

I'm prepared to take into account the mitigating factors and accept the Jekyll-Hyde history of his management here... and give him until Christmas to prove himself worthy of the job. I won't deny some of his terrible managerial performances this season but I think that opinion is fair.

I don't get the 'mixed bag' argument, myself. We've had a mixed bag of results across the two seasons. We've had consistently shite football with a six-game anomaly. This season is more excusable given the severe disruption to our team because of injuries but, even so, you'd expect to see some progress in helping us reach a footballing identity that isn't "smash it to Cisse". I haven't seen anything of the sort.

Pardew-believers and the wait-and-see-stance doesn't make sense to me, because I have seen nothing to suggest Pardew can be a long-term success. Not even glimmers of hope, really. Delaying getting rid is just delaying any chance we have of further success with this good group of individuals (which is all they are atm to be quite frank, individuals).

Sewelly's post in Pardew's thread is a sobering, but true, analysis of how we play and what we can/can't do. Ashley is Ashley though, so all this is just forum rhetoric of course.

I think people over romanticize the 6 game winning run from last year. The Norwich game we were really poor and limped to a 1-0 win. West Brom and Liverpool were great performances. Swansea we just defended and hit them with two sucker punches. Bolton we really struggled to break down until Ben Arfa scored a wonder goal and Stoke was the one true dominant performance in that run.

I don't want to re-live arguments from last season, but I don't think that's fair at all and is to do with why I think he should have till Christmas. Last season was an excellent managerial performance on the whole; this season has been a poor managerial performance on the whole.

Might be worse than that, if a few of them get fed up with it and fuck off.

Just not fair imo, bar the Norwich one which wasn't a great performance (but even then, we were coming off the back of a really dodgy run of form and it was a huge victory).

He urinated on Rodgers from a great height in the Swansea game; he played it to perfection. The Bolton game was comfortable too, we never looked like losing.

Fair enough, me neither - it's been done to death

The main point of my post was the long-term prospect of Pardew as manager. If you, or anyone else, can see him having the coaching ability to ever get us playing attractive football and dictating games on even a semi-regular basis then I envy your faith and wish I had some myself.

Really wasn't though, we had a great start, then our luck turned and we were in bad shape when he decided to finally give in and start Benny who turned the season around for us...

My opinion on Pardew's Newcastle career, in a nutshell, is:

Great last season. Shit this season. Should be backed in the summer and given until Christmas at the earliest.

Regarding his long-term credentials as Newcastle manager, I'm undecided.

I will admit that part of the reason why I think we should keep him is actually detached from the man himself: I simply can't be fucked with putting my trust in the board to getsomebody better. I know that's a conservative viewpoint but you can understand the trepidation with regards to a replacement.

At times, but not to the extent you're saying. We were rigid and unambitious at times, but for a team that was still gelling and still sore from the Carroll loss (and Nolan, to an extent) - that was very effective and Pardew was rightfully commended for it.

That's a fair point Yorkie.

My parting shot opinion: I'd rather twist and (figuratively!) go bust, than stick with (what is IMO) near-certain mediocrity or worse. Circling the drain with Pardew (the drain being either relegation, or the loss of Cabaye, HBA, Krul, Sissoko over time...).
