AP reporting that it's now confirmed that there'll be four guaranteed spots for the four biggest leagues in Europe (England, Spain, Italy and Germany) in the Champions League from the 2018/2019 season. Portugal, France and Russia get two guaranteed spots, Ukraine, Belgium, Holland, Turkey and Switzerland will get one guaranteed spot with the remaining five being up for qualifiers.

Absolute fucking bullshit, no need whatsoever for the big leagues to have an even easier ride in. Fucking useless UEFA.

This bit confirmed by UEFA today. Utter cunts.

What bullshit reasoning have they given for this?

Speaking about the amendments agreed for the new cycle, UEFA General Secretary ad interim Theodore Theodoridis said: "The evolution of UEFA's club competitions is the result of a wide-ranging consultative process involving all stakeholders and taking into account a wide range of expertise and perspectives.

"The amendments made will continue to ensure qualification based on sporting merit, and the right of all associations and their clubs to compete in Europe's elite club competitions.

"We are happy that European football remains united behind the concepts of solidarity, fair competition, fair distribution and good governance."

Or as Foluwa said; "Money money money."

Aye to be honest UEFA were probably shitting themselves that Italy may take one of England's spots in the coming years and they need as many of the English clubs in it as they can. I'm pretty sure UEFA would love to have more than 4 teams from England in the CL. They have done this so they can retain as many clubs from England as possible whilst still getting the big teams from elsewhere in there.

Europa League > Champions League imo

More interesting games sometines in terms checking out teams you aren't as familiar with, but the higher quality football (usually), players and the higher drama of it being the pinnacle of club football make it so much better for me.

If they were played at the same time, would you prefer to watch a Sevilla Benfica semi for a good but ultimately not as important cup or a Barcelona Bayern Munich one for the best possible European trophy?

Nah, Italy are no where near England at the moment. England has moved past Germany now as well.

It's a but unfair anyway but no real difference to what we have now. The 4th place teams are/were expected to win their qualifier.

Trying to put a positive spin on it, maybe this now means that there will be more even match ups in the play offs, so even though there are fewer places available, it might not get much more difficult for smaller teams to get in.

They've already done this by having league champions competing just against each other in the final round of qualifying for the group stage. For example Dundalk couldn't face Porto or Villareal in the last round

Did they annouce the wildcard thing that was proposed aka if a big team doesn't qualify they'll be parachuted in anyway?

Nope, so far they've only announced the 16 teams from the top 4 leagues, the rest will be announced later this year. Wasn't anything in the AP report from yesterday about that though, so fingers crossed.
