Segun Oluwaniyi
A country with five times the population of Britain and much lower money per capita is not simply going to tidy up everything because of a football tournament. If you are expecting Luxembourg next summer, you will be disappointed. What you can expect is massive amounts of money and man power being put into making the atmosphere at matches pleasant and every thing possible to be done by Brazilian authorities and FIFA to ensure the safety and comfort of visitors in areas directly affected by the World Cup. Personally, I think a lot of this is scaremongering by the Western press, even though legitimate problems do exist. This narrative has been going on since the day Brazil was awarded the tournament. Deuce
Safety is less of an issue than the steamrolling of Brazil's poor in preparation for the tournament.

It happens every time the World Cup is awarded to some place that isn't Europe and such a narrative will no doubt continued (perhaps justifiably) in 2018 and 2022 as well. Disco
Baba speaking some absolute truth here. Watched today's events unfold on tv here and it was shocking, totally beyond what we're used to at home, but comparing the local domestic scene in a developing country with a section of pop who live poverty and/or used to violence to the biggest tournament on Earth which will be on such a lockdown it's untrue is madness. Same was said with SA, nowt happened. The most shocking thing about today was the game continued, same thing happened in Argentina some months back, officials/FAs in these nations are usually the worst of all when it comes to doing th right thing unfortunately unless Ty worlds eyes are on them they just pass the buck or react instead of preventing

Tooj
I quite fancy Chile to make it out of their group if the Netherlands have a hiccup. I think they will as I don't think it's a particularly outstanding Dutch team.
LooneyToonArmy
probably already mentioned but Italy's location for fixtures are one of the worst.....vs England in Manaus, then Recife - where it's super hot then a 1pm kick off at Natal in the heat of the day. Ameritoon
For whatever it's worth--which is like, you know, nothing--here are ESPN's "Soccer Power Index" predictions: http://i.imgur.com/IjwfBMq.png Should be noted these aren't actually predictions, just each nation's percentage possibility of getting out of there group. Put together by Nate Silver, who's probably the best statistician around, he was the only one to get close to predicting the election in 2012. Guest Geordiesned
Actually planning a trip over to the Lakes with lads from work (well I'm not doing any of the planning) for first weekend of tournament so will be canny to take in England v Italy and Spain v Holland. Put together by Nate Silver, who's probably the best statistician around, he was the only one to get close to predicting the election in 2012. Um, no. Most statisticians projected Obama to win easily. Silver got the electoral college count exactly right. Sam Wang (Princeton) was also very close. It was the right wing pundits and propagandists who were way off. On the left, Markos Moulitsas (daily kos) was as accurate as Sliver.
Ameritoon
Right, but what he was the one shifted in the public eye because of the rights vocal battle against him. The point is, he's great at what he does and shouldn't be scoffed at because people think they're predictions.

MKSC
ITV always have two group games. BBC prefer to let them take two up front and make sure they get a knock out stage game. Obvs a risk if we go out but it's the way they always do it.

Flip
Why does June 14 have four matches for no obvious reason? Because Brazil plays on a thursday and is the only match sicne it's the opening. Would've been four games on the next day, if the next day was a Saturday or Sunday, now it's friday so the game has been moved to Saturday. June 14th will be ace. 4 matches in a row
