Jack Colback (now a free agent)

Guest Recoba

Colback is a solid 6/10 player who chips in with tackles, blocks, assists and even goals.  He would get in an around most PL matchday squads from Everton downwards.  He was potentially our player of the season last year (a horrible honour).

McClaren is playing a different system to Pardew/Carver and after watching the Gladbach and Southampton games it is clear that Colback needs to adapt somewhat.  Anita, who has never done it for me in the past, clearly suits the new system down to the ground and is now one our most important players.

To Colback's credit, once Anita went off, he had to do the job of two as Tiote was so far off the pace it was unreal and our structure fell apart.  Tiote has been a liability for years and hopefully Anita and Colback continue to be selected ahead of him.

To McClaren's credit, he is picking players to fit a system rather than just throwing the 11 "best" players onto the field.  With the 4-2-3-1 system I see Anita and Colback as the first choice "2".

Well said mate; voice of reason. Only minor disagreement, pure opinion, is he has been (for us and the Mac-na-maras) a solid 6+ out of ten player. He is reliably above average and  consistently puts in 'discretionary effort'; gives his all. A rare rather than 'to be expected' quality in premiership/any footballers, or any other job role.

The fact he puts in 100% effort every game and is consistently 6+ rated he is a valuable asset to us until we actually sign an authentic "pirlo"

4 goals and 6 assists last season, didn't realise it was so high, I just hate to watch how limited he is as a player though, so much so that I still don't want him in the starting 11.

I think Tiote is more limited as a player.

Since we're talking about Jack in the Anita thread and Anita in the Jack thread, I personally think Anita would have (and still could) succeed under McLaren's plans if McLaren hadn't bottled things elsewhere on the pitch. Giving Colo a new contract, not signing more defenders, and playing Obertan, Colback and Cisse alone up top making things ludicrously stretched in the middle of the park.

I can't judge either Anita or Colback until they are playing as either a defensive or attacking midfielder without the other there beside him as an insurance policy.

The pair of them don't fit comfortably in any of those roles though. Both halfway house players more suitable to a midfield flat 3. Anita isn't strong enough defensively to be a DM, Colback isn't strong enough offensively to be an AM. Both essentially water carriers. A crap version of Arteta & Flamini CM partnership. I don't even know who is meant to be who.

The only difference between those who prefer Colback and those who prefer Anita is that the ones who prefer Colback are wrong.

What a load of nonsense. Anita's been here 3 years and done absolutely nothing of note (West Ham at home last season apart). Colbacks had 1 season, scored 4 times and managed 6 assists for us. He's also a better defensive midfielder than Anita as well. In saying that I'd still Colback wasn't in our first XI either but he'll be an ever present this season, fitness permitting. I've got several friends over in Eindhoven who warned me Anita was hopeless when we signed him but I put that down to them just not liking him because he was from Ajax and they are all PSV fans and hate everything Ajax. So far they've been bang on.
