Might be a slightly controversial take this but I think the Bigi on the wing / defensive tactics against Benfica in the second leg were about the only time Pardew got his tactics right as NUFC manager, other than a handful of games in the latter days of the 5th place season.

If Benfica scored we needed 3 just to take it to extra time. Our best hope of winning that tie was 2-0 and it panned out more or less how he predicted, in that if we could be 1-0 up with 20-25 mins to go, we could bring all our attackers on and try for the second goal. We needed to get through the first hour unscathed really.

I remember Ben Arfa and others having good chances and coming close at 1-0 before the sucker punch at the death, on another night we maybe get through that tie.

Worth pointing out I hated loads about his tactics - the hoofball, Ben Arfa left on the bench behind Ryan Taylor or Obertan on the right, the obsession with Gouffran doing shuttle runs on the left flank every week, the way he threw players under the bus, the three years without a goal from a corner, and so on. But I think he got Benfica (h) right and we were edged out.

Can't remember if it was him or Stuart Pearce last summer said on Talksport we'd win the league this season

Hopefully they keep him away from the predictions this summer just to be safe.

 To be fair to @Alan Pardew I said the same thing, and we would have if it wasn't for that piece of fucking shit.

I think it was 2023 when Pearce said that, just after we beat Villa 5-1 on the opening day. Then we went away to Man City the following week and it was being talked up as our big test as title contenders

Match day 2 in the PL and here are Peter Drury and Gary Neville to orgas- er I mean commentate on Manchester City v Newcastle United.

The winner of this one will take a huge step towards lifting that trophy in 9 months time. Indeed 3 points today will be like having one hand on it...

That was before I saw Eddies new signings on the pitch. Hardly my fault that Adam Elanga looks like he’s won a competition in the local supermarket when he’s on the pitch for you lot. Same with that striker from Brentford.
Eddie needs to add more players who can play on the front foot and who can add that little extra quality on the ball you want as a manager.

Not enough fret
Shocking lack of LB substitutions

No 6ft 4 signings

poor floated corner routines

The Pardew effect had worn off by this season too, it was still there last year when we won the cup. Obviously still strong at Palace.
