They just didn't qualify automatically this time We don't deserve to qualify this time either, one of the worst squads we've had since the 90s, worst manager i can remember. I hope we get there, but we really don't deserve it at the moment
Disco
Tried to find it but couldn’t, and I don’t think he posts anymore, but @aussiemagassured this or the next WC they’d win. One of always funnies how new country football fans who assume success based on nothing but old country football will just cede and cease.
wiseman
Unfortunately for us, the chance of us winning a world cup in the next few generations is basically nil. There's too much opposition within Australia to football ever succeeding that it will never really happen without a complete culture change here. The best chances we've had would've been if after the golden generation of viduka, Kewell, schwarzer and the like could've inspired younger generations, but it really didn't galvanise us to improve as a country, there's no investment into grass roots football either and our national league is a cluster fuck at the best of times. Add to this that the best home grown manager we've ever had was basically undermined in the role to the point he quit after qualifying for the WC, things need to change and drastically. I am hoping though the women's world cup here next year at least helps drive the women's game here because our Matildas are highly regarded, to the point I'd say that Sam Kerr is probably the most loved footballer we have at the moment. The A-league had potential, but naturally they took advantage of the Socceroos 2006 momentum and the hype of the early seasons by... shoving it behind a Foxtel paywall for 15 years. Meanwhile the NRL and AFL keep getting record TV deals and for all their many organisational fuck ups in other departments, run continual master classes on how to properly market their code. I remember the heady days of Dwayne De Rosario (one of my all-time MLS faves), Julian De Guzman, an ancient Paul Stalteri, the once and future Atiba Hutchinson, and a half dozen dudes playing in the German third division. Atiba’s gotta be on the WC roster right? Edited March 28, 2022 by Tomato Deuce

Single handedly changed what Football means to this country. First with the Women's team and now this, legend status confirmed. ✅

My cousin played with DeRo at Malvern (top Canadian club team), but is a few years younger than him, so their stints on the National team didn't line up. My cuz eventually landed a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, captained the team there and hung them up shortly after. Atiba is, played a cameo yesterday at the ripe age of 39. toontownman
Remember Craig Forrest at West Ham. Means an awful lot to and awful lot of people. Crazy to think of the players that have come and gone without being part of a WC. The fact it is on the front page of every newspaper in Canada this morning shows how much is changing. With the co-hosting in 2026 and expanded WC going forward it is most likely Canada will always qualify going forward, combined with the CPL slowly growing and womens league hopefully next, things are like Herdman says "We are only just getting started". He had a rough run with injuries and then was involved in a car crash and never fully came back the same. Herdman did give him a send off camp though before he retired. He played on with Forge and played in their inaugural Champions League qualifying run before retiring just over a year ago.
