If we had peak Rio, Terry and Cole back I'd be pounding the drum for setting the whole team up to be as solid as possible and break on counter with Vardy up top and a lot of pace behind him, really not convinced we're solid enough at the back to play that way though.

Yeah, Leicester's counter-attacking style was ideal for Vardy, and as we can't play that way, there's not much of a case for him starting. As others have said, he'd be a useful sub against a tired defence though.

Leicester topped the table as a side leaking goals at the back, the strong defence came much later in the season. Surely all Newcastle fans learnt the lesson of attack being the best form of defence watching Alan Pardews 20 men behind the ball 4-0 losses to southampton & friends.

Vardy would come off the bench for me, I don't think you can justify starting him ahead of Kane and he's more of an impact sub against tired legs.

Vardys numbers are better at just about everything. There is a bias against the lad for some reason. Kane's actually been quite quiet isolated upfront recently for us. Bar the offside goal, i cant think of many chances we've created for him?

What numbers? You can't just translate what you did your your club side in the Premier League onto the international stage. England cannot and will not play like Leicester, which naturally limits Vardy's most dangerous attribute. It's mindless to just sit there shouting at the TV about why Vardy isn't playing like he does for Leicester.

Further to that, I simply think Kane is a much better all round player.

Honestly, if you're going to spout some random crap about not performing on the international stage, at least back it up with figures. These are since October when Vardy was a regular in the squad.

October 2015 England 2-0 Estonia

Kane 90 minutes, 0 goals

Vardy 7 minutes, 0 goals

October 2015 Lithuania 0-3 England

Kane 59 minutes, 0 goals

Vardy 90 minutes, 0 goals

November 2015 Spain 2-0 England

Kane 90 minutes, 0 goals

Vardy 0 minutes, 0 goals

November 2015 England 2-0 France

Kane 80 minutes, 0 goals

Vardy 0 minutes, 0 goals

March 2016 Germany 2-3 England

Kane 90 minutes, 1 goal

Vardy 19 minutes, 1 goal

March 2016 England 1-2 Netherlands

Kane 20 minutes, 0 goals

Vardy 90 minutes, 1 goal

May 2016 England 2-1 Turkey

Kane 90 minutes, 1 goal

Vardy 90 minutes, 1 goal

May 2016 England 2-1 Australia

Kane 0 minutes, 0 goals

Vardy 0 minutes, 0 goals

June 2016 England 1-0 Portugal

Kane 78 minutes, 0 goals

Vardy 66 minutes, 0 goals

Kane Total Minutes = 597

Kane Total Goals = 2

Kane Minutes per Goals = 298.5

Vardy Total Minutes = 362

It would be fucking pointless playing Vardy on the wing, he looks less suited to the role even than Kane or Rooney. My preferred formation is a 4-3-3 and in that system Kane is the better option as a striker. That goes beyond recent goalscoring stats and whatever else you fancy digging up.

Vardy's pace and direct style will be perfect as an option against tired defences or if we switch to a front 2. This is why I hate the argument of picking players on form for clubs, sometimes they just aren't effective international players. I'm not saying Vardy wholly falls into that category, but he definitely shouldn't be shoehorned into the team as he is being at the moment.

Should still be our starting central striker.

Alan Pardew talking to The Mail:

“England are still looking for their best team and system and are wrestling with how to use their strikers, but one position is clear to me: the need for Harry Kane to play as the No 9 through the middle. “He is your out-ball, a player comfortable playing with his back to goal and, yes, he scored goals for Tottenham drifting in from wide, but is the most effective centre forward in the England squad. “That means leaving out either Jamie Vardy or Daniel Sturridge, or playing one of them in a different role out wide…but any striker playing out there also has to occupy the opposition full back to stop him from attacking regularly. Goalscorers don’t always like to do this, they see it as donkey work. “Strikers are usually the biggest egos in your group. “When I was at Newcastle I alternated between Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba through the middle, with the other playing wide. “My argument was to give each their feed of playing in the premier role while also asking them to play the support.”

Each their feed of the premier role ... totally disregarding the fact Papiss was hopelessly useless in that position. This guy really is a piece of work. A glimpse into the horrible job he would do for England.

He thinks he's a cut above, man

Fuck playing wingers on your wings with the instruction of running at the opposing fullbacks, in fact, fuck even playing wingers on your wings with the instruction of marking the opposing winger. Play a striker there and just tell him to do the lot, he'll score goals too.

The man's a fruitloop.

Also goalscorers love doing this, you tit. It's what they live for. If by 'occupy' you mean 'make their job hard by attacking them' and not 'stand 5 yards outside of your own 18 yard box'.

Putting aside the Pardew agenda for a moment, he is right on one point - that you pick Kane to play as a number 9, and then work around that. He's actually very good in that role, and defenders - even good ones - find it very difficult to keep him quiet.
