Don't particularly think this is van Gaal's fault. They generally play really boring football that masks how bad they are defensively. They had to go for it tonight and that defence got shown up

He pissed away 40m or whatever on a that kid striker, yet they gave Hernandez and van Persie away. Schweinsteiger is another poor signing. He's playing players out of position and he's refused to drop a shocking Rooney.

Van Gaal is a awful.

Meant just the game tonight like. Martial is a very good player fwiw

He's a kid and he's certainly not what they needed this season.

I think the thing with with Man United now- doubtlessly they are in transition, but it's all about signing big name players, rather than signing players to build a team. All in the name of building the brand and appeasing sponsors.

No getting away that since the EPL became over-ran with cash, the quality has gone downhill.

Same every time, though. Whenever an English team underachieves in the CL it's because they play passively and at the wrong pace. LvG's a pathetic appointment, really.

I blame the lack of a winter break...

No doubt that soundbite will get its annual airing by the pundits shortly.

Hargreaves was banging on about it over the weekend on that Fletch and Sav show so it will definitely get another airing

LVG has been awful and finally the results are  showing it. they can bore the PL to top 3 and maybe a title challenge.

Even if they take the EL seriously - i'm not sure they're good enough to do any damage in it.

Have they under achieved? They're just not good enough.

But also - perhaps more entertaining week to week. No great teams. Poor teams have some good quality.

hilarious when the 'everyone should want the English teams to qualify' brigade emerge on social media

I reckon I've met about 4 of them max in my life. All supported clubs they'd literally never been to the city of.

Schadenfreude is the best thing about football, particularly when you support s*** like 99% of people.

Aye.

Malmo's goalie had a mare but Ronaldo's insistence on celebrating the fuck out of every goal he scores makes me smile.

He's been terrific for them up until tonight. Suffered a concussion in their friendly on Thursday, have to wonder if that's why he was so poor tonight.

Surely it's only a matter of time before the premier league loses 4 CL places.

It would be great if Leicester qualify, don't get very far (well, they won't be seeded and will probably get a tough draw), and it works out as the final nail in the coefficient coffin sending England below Italy and down to three places.

One reason England's coefficient has been falling is that English teams don't take the Europa League seriously, so it will be just desserts.

England loses an almost four point gap once 11/12 is replaced with 15/16. The current gap is three points, with the points for 15/16 level at the moment.

Another two point gap goes next year when 12/13 stops being counted, and then again the season after.

I don't watch much European football, but you'd expect Roma to go through and probably Arsenal to go out tonight. Juve could also go further than City and Chelsea, based on experience alone.
