Not the biggest fan of Townsend. Can't really put my finger on it. In any case, he's not a player we should splash the cash on. We're not in that sort of position with Ashley in charge.

Similar feelings, but also I think he could be better under Rafa again. If Rafa rates him then fine by me.

I kinda think the opposite with limited funds Rafa can't gamble he needs known quantities.

Feel bad for Ritchie. Rafa' s been jilted and moved on but now his ex has turned up available and interested again. Ritchie is the spare wheel and was always just a rebound. Hopefully it's not a case of never go back.

Be unhappy with Townsend, he can be good on his day but his career is full of flattering to deceive after a couple of performances.  Ritchie across a season would still be better.

I think it’s pretty close TBH, Ritchie has his periods where he doesn’t do anything for a few weeks.

If being valued and wanted by a world class manager to the extent that Rafa does doesn’t make Townsend feel 10 foot tall then nowt will.

More pace on the wing, something we lack with Ritchie, similar end product including set pieces, younger with a higher resale value.

Townsend as a direct replacement for Ritchie will be fine.

I thought he was excellent when he was here. Does count against him he left, and I think Ritchie's set pieces have been tremendous for us, will be missed very badly indeed if not properly replaced but he is slow and didn't have the best first half of last season. I would be disappoited to lose him, his attitude has been one of the pillars of Rafa's work rebuilding the squad. I wouldn't be displeased with Townsend though, even if he is an idiot for jumping ship.

Not a slight on Rafa, but it's why i always find it weird fans talking about players being loyal to clubs. Ritchie dropped down a division, played in the champ, helped get us up, one season in the prem and now he's out the door.

Hmmm doesn't feel the most brutal, he'll leave very well liked, he is in decline and getting slower, had a reasonable length here. He may not want to be on the bench, rather go to championship where he knows he will boss.

forgot about this quote

I had to think long and hard in the summer about what I wanted to do; stay and play in the Championship did not cross my mind, in the end.

“I had to go with my head and not my heart.

“I did not want to take a drop down, especially while the options were still there in the Premier League.”

He will be decent for us, can't say i like the guy though.

Don't think that quote is that bad  :dontknow:

Yeah but for Rafa he was great, what he did for other managers is pretty irrelevant.

Add the context of who he was going to play under and who he left.

Wasn’t aware of this quote, it leaves a bit of a sour taste imo.

It shouldn't cross his mind either, remove the emotion for a second and see it from a pro footballer's point of view and pretty much all of them should want to stay in the league with the most exposure.

Because some players do step down doesn't mean it's wrong to want to stay in the Premier League, it's very unfortunate he chose to join Pardew but there's nothing wrong with what he did or said.

He also implies that if he follows his heart he would stay at us. It's not the best quote but don't think it's an unforgivable one. Most players are going to want to stay in the PL. Obviously him choosing Pardew is pretty sour but I don't blame him too much for wanting to stay in the PL in the prime years of his career

Ritchie didn’t stay with us in the Championship, he joined us as we went into the Championship. You could argue that he was loyal to us and willing to take a risk with us, you could also argue that he was disloyal to Bournemouth who gave him a chance in the first place.

If people want to play the ‘loyalty card’ then we’ll end up with no one.

Can't see it happening. In fact, these links seem like very lazy Sunday links.

I'm sure Townsend is a name on a list but I would be surprised if we were interested for the sort of prices mentioned.

He hadn't played Championship football since 2012 though so I imagine 4 years later, in possibly the best form of his career, he wouldn't have wanted to go back down to the Championship.

England had just had a terrible tournament too and getting back into that set-up would have played on his mind too I imagine, which would be more achievable in the Prem than the Championship
