Murphy’s current form isn’t likely to be sustainable just as Miggys in 22/23 was never going to be. Murphy obviously isn’t ideal long term for a CL chasing side, but as Howe has proved a few times now he can squeeze enough % out of more limited players by keeping them in the team week in week out and reap the rewards. I think Murphy will be fine for the rest of season, even if his numbers do drop off some. In the summer we will address the RW I’m fairly certain, but I wouldn’t be so sure whoever is signed will displace Murphy instantly and come straight into the side. The under lying point I’m making falls back to the tired PSR conversation as always. Almiron’s purple patch was based entirely on two superb footballers (Trippier and Bruno) sharing a side with him and playing perfect passes for his few attacking strengths to allow him to bag some goals. Murphy is creating goals for Isak, as well as scoring himself - because Murphy is a better and more effective footballer than Almiron.

This is a fairly accurate view of what he's like as a player. In general play, he's not giving much. But in the final third, he's consistently created chances. 15 PL assists in 30 PL starts from last season to this. Evenly spread between the two seasons. This is not a Miggy Almiron purple patch. Sums him up perfectly tbh. I think many people have said more or less the same thing in non-graph form.
Likelylad Posted Monday at 11:25 Share Posted Monday at 11:25 A bit more of a basic view but i do love how he strikes the ball. Knocks it out his feet and wraps his laces around it. Been unlucky cracking the woodwork a few times.

He strikes the ball beautifully. That one off the post is just another in what's becoming a long list of agonising "fuck, I wish that had gone in"s, alongside Tonali's effort at Old Trafford most recently. Murphy has a spectacular collection of them though. Was it the Arsenal home game in 21-22 where he smacked one off a post from 25 yards and was leaping up and down in frustration afterwards? He had an amazing post to goal ratio for a few months. I always thought it kind of encapsulated him as a player. Had the brains and technique to make the shot as difficult for the goalkeeper as possible but would push it too far making the effort (almost) pointless. But if he could get a grip on that then you'd have something special. Edited Monday at 11:44 by

Yeah, that’s fairly impressive stuff tbf. I hadn’t realised he had quite as many assists as he does, likely higher than they would be if he was not assisting Isak but solid numbers nonetheless

I don’t think anyone will argue that Almiron is a better footballer than Murphy I do feel that summary is harsh on him though, a lot of the good work on that side during 22/23 was down to the ground Almiron was able to cover for 90 mins week in week out. AyeDubbleYoo Posted Monday at 13:11 Share Posted Monday at 13:11 He really seems to have been training that cut inside onto his left foot. Another level to his threat if that becomes a genuine option. Fair play, I used to think he was absolute dog but he's doing better than I ever thought possible. AyeDubbleYoo Posted yesterday at 10:37 Share Posted yesterday at 10:37 Clearly he’s brilliant at listening and following instructions, he’s doing amazing work this season. Signs the coaches are going to the next level with him as well, these left foot shots are a relatively new addition. As a confirmed hater in the past, happy to be able to like him now. TheBrownBottle Posted yesterday at 12:38 Share Posted yesterday at 12:38 I'm a soppy old twat, but he's one of us - which I really do think has to be remembered. When I eventually shuffle off this rock, I'd be surprised if Murphy makes my 'top five NUFC RW' list. But I love the lad - can't be helped. He's living my dream - NUFC fan by birth, yes to get where we're looking to go he probably won't be there - but I love the lad, and he's a better player than he's given credit for. Likelylad Posted yesterday at 13:58 Share Posted yesterday at 13:58 I genuinely hope he's now allowed the same level of grace that the top players within the side get when they try something and it doesn't come off. Instead of the crowd getting on his case with ott groaning. He was clearly frustrated by it when he started shouting back at the crowd when he scored awhile back.
