Palace have agreed terms with Diomande, negotiating a fee with Sporting now.

This is a great litmus test for how we scout mind, if he goes to Palace and tears it up we've dropped the ball.

We know it's a position we are targeting and we know it's an age profile and budget we could work in. The fact we obviously aren't in for him means we have someone in mind we deem a better fit.

Tbf, if Diomande was a top target for us then we would get him imo. He wouldn’t be choosing Palace over us.

I'm just worried we're being very rigid with who we're targeting and why.

I think our transfer approach may actually be very imperfect, to put it politely, and some fans seem unable to bear the thought/reality of that.

Yeap. Problem is we've seen it with Huijsen (and arguably others) already.

If we're leaning towards a strong preference for well established top level players, and showing little interest in investing in prospects too, it's a high risk strategy imo. One that eventually will come back to bite us.

Diversification (mix of established players and up and comers) of transfer targets is key imo, and I'm not seeing much evidence of Eddie wanting to do that. If this window ends and I was wrong, wonderful, I'll hold my hands up.

It's kinda obvious the club thought they had Guehi in the bag and thus passed on everyone else last summer. I think Parish and his demands really caught us off guard.

I think in the past we have been diverse in our targets as well, I know this drought we are currently enduring has people fucked up but if you step back our work in the market has been second to none.

We can't be critical yet imo, obviously if our business is looking like the gobi once the window closes that will be another story.

We weren’t in for Huijsen because he wanted a release clause so he could piss off after a year.

Other than the financial upside of that, we don’t want players like that.

I get the idea of wanting committed players etc, but on the other side of the coin, if high potential players are available for 12 mill who we can likely fleece for a lot more (ie 50 mill) a year later, we should be pushing for them. We can't lament the injustice of PSR while refusing to go after players like that that we can massively profit from.

Think it’s more to do with the June PSR period tbh. I just don’t think they want to go yet until July 1st. Rightly or wrongly

Going to be a lot of disappointment when July 1st rolls around and the club still aren’t doing anything.

Well, IF they aren't doing anything.

But people need to accept that might be the case. And it might not get better for the rest of the window.

Or it will and some of us will owe the club an apology.

He would still choose us, we aren’t missing out on targets by having to wait until July imo.

argh GIF

Who is this Diomande? I've been informed no other non-cartel clubs are doing business, and it's ultra difficult to find players to improve your team.

Believe the challenge comes when trying to sign proven premier league players for under 20million, who you have scouted from the age of 5 and who tend to play left wing (usually)....joking. We'll we ok, I think, wont we? :)

We do accept it might be the case, but the difference is we're prepared to wait to actually see what happens.

Rather than moan about things throughout the window in anticipation of things going badly.

I'm really not sure what the benefit of that is.

I’ve seen quite many questioning the signing of Wirtz. Or people saying he has never impressed them and that they can very well see him being a big flop.

You can never say never in football or take anything for granted. But judging by what I’ve seen I struggle to see him being anything but a massive success for years to come. It might take him a bit of time to settle before he hits the ground running.  Despite the price I can see him being a bargain when you consider how much is being spent on some players.

And say helping us get yet another CL campaign in that year their playing, yeah it’s a win all round for me.

His subsequent transfer to Real Madrid…

If he’d joined Newcastle and then Madrid had came in the transfer probably would have happened, but he’d surely have accepted a higher and more limited clause from NUFC as he’d have been playing at a higher level.

The offer is now CL football, even the most ambitious players will recognise this is a club you can do well at. And personally I’m fine with players bought for £25m having £100m Real Madrid clauses in their contracts

I think you know the answer to your question. Apologies.

Give him a bit of patience and it won’t be too long before he’s settled and at his best tearing it up*

Max Aarons to Rangers

Only 25 and he's already on a downward trajectory. Always thought it was odd how much fanfare him and Lewis got playing fullback for Norwich. Aarons was linked with Barcelona and Bayern ffs

The bold bit we can go round in circles arguing as we’ll never know, but I disagree.

When a player views a move as a stepping stone, as long as it’s to a PL club, I think they’ll choose the one that offers the best release clause (assuming there isn’t a massive discrepancy in wages).

It’s all about how they’ve mapped their careers out.

We’re trying hard to establish ourselves with the elite (despite being massively handicapped by the rules), so it’s no good allowing the perception of the club being a stepping stone in any way.

Having said that, if a player were to ask for a release clause where, if activated, the money would be genuinely transformative, that’s different, and I can probably get on board with it (so if Isak said ‘I’ll sign a new contract but I want a release clause of £150m’, then fair enough).
