There is nothing over the top about the praise he’s getting now and people not wanting him to go at this point in January when (1) We have no real clue when Pope will be back (2) Lack of confidence in goalies 3, 4, 5 in our pecking order (3) Martin’s performances since he has come in have been good and (4) his ball playing ability has been immense. 

 

I am 100% supportive of him moving on and wish him the best, but I do not want to do so without a competent #2 signed / loaned in who can step right into the team now or someone who is the future #1. 

 

Press reports have said the fee would be nominal, so I don’t find this to be a PSR master stroke (unless the fee is sizable). We are at a very crucial part of our season right now. 

 

Wishful thinking time, but if this is a Saudi club who are in for him, I’d like to think they can get a call from our Saudi ownership to work out a better deal here for us w/r/t timing of the sale.

My guess is that we're confident that Pope will be back for the Wolves game, with Vlachodimos trusted to play against Bromley.

 

Getting a bit of money for Dubravka now and bringing forward a Trafford deal that was probably pencilled in for the summer makes a lot of sense.

 

If the plan is to just flog him on and hope that Pope doesn't get injured again then that's a different story and one that I wouldn't expect to be the case.

He's out of contract in the summer, right? So why buy him and loan him out when they could just sign him on a free in six months?

We’ve got to trade better undoubtedly but this surely boils down to how much are we getting for him. You don’t risk jeopardising the season for a couple of million when the treble is still on and if you don’t have a replacement to come in.

Selling a player to Saudi then getting him back on loan until his contract expires anyway, rendering the sale pointless on the Saudi buyer's part. I'd love to see the league's reaction to that.

Can't be saying things like Treble is on without a safety  someone might read it seriously

Agreed that he was shakey last night.  Flapped and missed at crosses. The one he kicked was crazy.  Punched a few he could’ve caught.  
 

But he did enough and made some big saves.

Wont blame him for being shakey on the corners. Arsenal are the best team in the league at set pieces and they clearly targeted him. I thought he did very well overall.

While he had some shaky moments last night, I dare say most 'keepers will do so when they're just getting pelted with set pieces and crosses all night. I have nothing to back that up though because like fuck am I going to watch a Stoke tribute act any time other than when we play them.

 

I think for the most part he looked confident coming to claim the ball even if it got a bit messy at times. Was particularly pleased with some solid punches out of the danger area.

The only one he came for and missed, he was fouled, so I'd say he coped well. Couple of times when the ball was on the floor I felt he could have come and grabbed with his hands but decided to try and kick it away.

I saw that kicking moment and thought that this is a guy who knows he's off and doesn't want to get injured. Why else would you try to kick rather than just diving on it.

If, as it appears, last night was his last appearance from us then he has bookended his time with a brilliant debut and an amazing spell to finish.

In between a bit mixed but I really think we are fortunate to have had a keeper as good as him as the back up.

I'm not as misty eyed as some about him leaving.  I actually think he wasn't very good last night and made me nervous at every cross.  The upturn in form can be contributed to a number of things and he has certainly helped in games where we have wanted to play out from the back more and have more control.  Which we haven't really done the last 2.5 games.

 

I'm just glad that he got the chance to right the wrongs of last season.  As there were some absolute shit shows from him.  He has been here 7 years and was a great keeper early on.  Before I think the injuries and his confidence took a hit after the Euros/WC or whatever it was.  So it is nice for him he gets to go out on a high and remembered fondly.  As it would be different if he left in the summer, I think.   

 

Fully signed up member of the Pope fan club.  But this has given us a glimpse into the future of what we need from our goalkeeper and reluctantly agree that it is more of an area that needs upgrading than I perhaps first appreciated. As the team has evolved, the need for a ball playing keeper is now perhaps greater than it was.  I didn't think it was a big issue for the first two seasons of Pope being here with the way we played.
