I'm suspicious that this talk of keeping him due to his form is to try and get a fee of note for him.

I'd love to think so but I suspect not.

Players have to leave at some point.  I think we need to sit Young Eddie down and explain this to him in the nicest way possible.

I'd agree if I believed they were going to start offering a contract extension. But if it's the difference between losing him now and losing him in four months and neither get us a transfer fee, what tangible benefit is there to letting him go now?

This is subject to him being happy to give us those few months, of course. If he's dead set on going I guess we just suck it up.

So now we’re losing him on a free?

im beginning to think Paul Mitchell was not the brilliant tactician I thought he was

Where's Ashworth when you need him?

If we're getting nowt we should try to keep him until summer. He's done well the last few games and shown a glimpse of how useful a lively ball-playing keeper would be to this team. But if it's now or never for him I don't see how we can really stand in his way.

What's so bad about the Greek fella? He looked fine playing for Greece when I watched him.

If we keep playing like we have recently we don't really need our keeper to do anything except quickly recycle the ball to reset attacks!

To be fair, a good goalie does more than jumping about to catch shots. Coordinating the defence, adopting patterns on who will cover each part of the net when under attack etc. So they can play a role in not facing so many (dangerous) shots in the first place.

It unsettled our back four and structure as at that time we were used to Pope sweeping quite high which even he doesn’t really do much now.

As for just the goals specifically I would agree that the first one probably still beats Pope despite his bigger reach due to the pace off the cross but sadly I still think he saves the second.

The point I think we are making wasn’t meant as a dig a Karius. He made a great second half save I recall. The point is we went from Pope to having a Cup Tied Dubravka and rely on our third choice GK for his one and only game for the club in a Cup Final!

Played against Arsenal as well. We lost 4-1, I think.

Great record he has.

Wait, people thought we were getting a fee?

I was always under the impression that any fee was negligible.

I can see both sides to this one. I can see why Dubravka will want the security of the Saudi money and I can see why Newcastle might want to keep him around because we may have a cup final on the horizon.

Fair play to Dubravka for playing so well that he's causing this headache.

It seemed like some people thought the £6m rumour was possibly true  that always sounded outrageous.

Most seemed to be reporting a nominal fee or just basically buying out the rest of his contract.  Now no fee and no PSR benefit at all?  I don't pretend to keep up with the FFP/PSR nonsense as it bores me to tears.  But if the reports were correct about some sort of fee, we would then see some sort of PSR benefit, no?

If we're just letting him swan off and we don't gain anything from it at all.  Then what is the point?  He'll be off the books in the summer anyway.

Not quite as far out the box as usual this season.  But he is still in the 90th percentile for defensive actions outside the penalty area based on his FBref.  92nd percentile across the top 5 leagues over the last year.

Zero fee story sounds like a windup, why would that even be a thing?

I'd imagine we gave him the go ahead midway through this run, not expecting him to be nearly as useful by now. In isolation it's not that strange to let a back up 35 year old 'keeper with 6 months of his contract off on a free.

Obviously there's now more cons than pros to us doing it and I guess that's why the talk is mostly about us trying to persuade him to stay.

He may of been promised he could leave in January for all we know.

But popey got injured.

I'd give the Greek a chance until pope is back.

I think the Greek would already have been given a chance if they thought he was any good. We would be wanting Dubs to say if we had any faith in the Greek lad.

Swap the Greek with James Trafford, and the £20M paid for the Greek doesn't seem like such a bad deal after all...?🤷‍♂️

Why would Burnley do such a swap deal?

It was a deal that prevented a points deduction, a means to an end really.

So pay his wages until the summer, he carries on being a capable backup for Pope (based on these last 7-8 games) and everyone is a bit less paranoid about another injury to our number 1.  Then he goes for free when his contract runs out.  Or we let him leave for free now?

Why the fuck would we just let him leave for free this month if there is no PSR benefit?  That makes no sense.

To save on wages and clear some room from this perspective as I understand it

Was probably more the player pushing for the move then if he was perhaps on for a good final contract. However I don't see the harm in him hanging on  then for end of season when he can still go but likely get a signing on fee aswell.

You are right of course but we are talking about a league rumoured to be willing to pay £30m and £500kpw for Casimero. If we got something around £5m it would hardly raise eyebrows. At least it shouldn’t but as you know it’s NUFC selling to Saudi…

My understanding is that his potential saudi club is not PIF owned so can't see why eyebrows should be raised .

TBH we have had great results this last 4-6 weeks or so, but it's not like Dubravka has had to do much. It's always hard to say who is contributing what to a clean sheet, but most of these games he is making 0-1 saves and not particularly busy.

Which is great, of course!

I think the problem is more that we have very little backup if Pope gets injured again.

I actually think how assured Dubravka is on the ball is one of the reasons we've turned the corner tbh. It allows our defenders to use him when the opposition press us, and us to break into space, which is just not possible with Pope.

I would actually say that if Dubravka does stays, when Pope comes back it shouldn't be a certainty that he's automatically put back in, especially given how Popes form was quite poor before his injury.
