Longstaff won't be leaving in the summer - nor should he be at any point in the near future.  There are UEFA's HG rules for a start.

Register one less GK next year (who has 4 registered?), get shot of Longstaff, keep Miley around the place. Get some pure profit on Longstaff for FFP.

I still think he’s a solid PL player - he’s not the greatest, like.

Ultimately, every player is sellable - it’s the HG element which would have concerned me.  I don’t think Miley is at Longstaff’s level at all at the moment.  Hopefully in a few years’ time he’ll be far better than him

Howe defending him this morning in his press conference.

Said he's playing through an injury..

Miley should have played ahead of him then tbh because he was a passenger on Monday..

A bit puzzled as to why he would play and injured Longstaff over the others. Both because other could do a better job in this scenario, but also the injury can get worse. Worth the risk? Did his sports science team tell him to pick him?

He really said that?

Lots of players play through injuries with painkillers etc - depends on the nature of it. It's hardly like we've been bursting at the seams with options. It would make sense though - there's been a drop off from last season when his engine got him through games and he worked his way into matches because of it.

If he’s playing through an injury, why is he playing every minute of every game when there’s options that can play his position on the bench. Howe doesn’t seem to be learning regarding injuries from the start of the season and seems unable to rotate the squad.

There is reason to believe that Miley or Anderson could've done better anyways, considering how Longstaff has played with his injury..

Well maybe, but then Miley is young and to some has already been overplayed. And Anderson has just come back, and to some we make returning players come back too soon.

A fit and firing Anderson, I'd probably agree with you, but I don't see what goes on in training. And I also remember how much when Longstaff was out previously, he was suddenly missed, just like Anderson is the solution now.

I think had Joelinton been fit, this would have been less of an issue, as the others could have been rotated more easily as the situation required. And I won't even mention Tonali.

Ok he's injured, I think it was obvious he's not 100% and carrying something, but that doesn't explain why he's getting 90+ minutes when others around him are subbed off, that's the only head scratcher for me.

I’d rather we move towards footballers in the middle. You’re always playing with a deficit with someone with that fundamental lack of ability.

Agreed. He doesn't even offer top-level athleticism either.

If we can get £18-20m for him just do it. We can keep Anderson around the 6th choice mark and Miley's ceiling is far higher.

I agree. But I can't see it happening.

I think £10m is more realistic. I'd take that.

I think only championship promoting teams would have interest to bid something like 12-15m for him.

In the Hull-Bruce, Stoke-Pulis, Wigan-Jewell era aye. But most Championship teams coming up try to play proper football and want footballers in their side. Like - he could go to a Luton but they would offer half what you're suggesting and think he'd be good value in the Champ.

With everything we've seen this season, are you genuinely puzzled?

Glad he's confirmed he's been playing with pain.

He's never been the best. But he's been super bad recently and many of us expected something was at play and now Howe has confirmed.

It’s been known all season as far back as when he returned.

Fair, don't know all the details on this one. As someone mentioned though, we could've probably subbed him in some games.

The full quotes for context:

Quote

Eddie Howe, on criticism of playing Sean Longstaff despite midfielder carrying an injury: “I’ve had no other midfielders to play. I would have rested Sean for sure. I’ve got to look after Lewis (Miley), he’s only 17. Anderson hasn’t been available, Sandro hasn’t been available. I’ve had nobody else to pick. Sean would probably say he doesn’t need a rest but I would have managed him and looked after him (if I could) because he’s not been 100% fit and has played through pain for the team and that deserves acknowledgment. “Sean needs to train regularly and that’s been disrupted due to an ongoing foot problem since Everton at the end of last season. Last week he had an injection (to play) and trained late in the week. He’s had some really, really, good games for us this season and he’s a really important player for his game intelligence. He’s integral to us when he’s at his best. I back him and his ability.”

And on fan criticism of players in general… “This season more than any other in my career (I’ve said to players) ‘we need you to play.’ Now I don’t want get the violins out and feel sorry for ourselves but it’s the reality of the position due to lack of depth. That’s why I always compliment the players. Not everyone sees behind the scenes what they’re giving. Sometimes when a player goes out & plays and he’s not feeling great and then doesn’t to perform to the level he wants to gets criticism for it. And you’re thinking ‘he’s actually playing for the club here, he’s not playing for himself. That’s difficult to take if you are the player. “That’s where it’s my job to protect them because these lads are giving everything, and have given everything this year. For me they deserve some protection & support. These are top players and were outstanding last season consistently when fully fit. We need to support them through this period, nurse them back to their very best, because they can make the difference for us. I love my players and want to help them in every way.”

Bit of a learning moment from me that, I always jump to the lazy/disinterested/moody/unhappy/doesn't like the manager reasons for players who seem to be underperforming for periods.

Playing through injuries must be a lot more common that I would have thought from playing FM at least. On FM you always send them to a specialist rather than do injections, and just play the 16 year olds to keep everyone happy. But it's not your livelihood on the line and you can't save-scum IRL.
