The College Dropout
Glad he's confirmed he's been playing with pain. He's never been the best. But he's been super bad recently and many of us expected something was at play and now Howe has confirmed.

And Anderson has just come back, and to some we make returning players come back too soon. A fit and firing Anderson, I'd probably agree with you, but I don't see what goes on in training. And I also remember how much when Longstaff was out previously, he was suddenly missed, just like Anderson is the solution now. I think had Joelinton been fit, this would have been less of an issue, as the others could have been rotated more easily as the situation required. And I won't even mention Tonali. Fair, don't know all the details on this one. As someone mentioned though, we could've probably subbed him in some games.
54
The full quotes for context: Quote Eddie Howe, on criticism of playing Sean Longstaff despite midfielder carrying an injury: “I’ve had no other midfielders to play. I would have rested Sean for sure. I’ve got to look after Lewis (Miley), he’s only 17. Anderson hasn’t been available, Sandro hasn’t been available. I’ve had nobody else to pick. Sean would probably say he doesn’t need a rest but I would have managed him and looked after him (if I could) because he’s not been 100% fit and has played through pain for the team and that deserves acknowledgment. “Sean needs to train regularly and that’s been disrupted due to an ongoing foot problem since Everton at the end of last season. Last week he had an injection (to play) and trained late in the week. He’s had some really, really, good games for us this season and he’s a really important player for his game intelligence. He’s integral to us when he’s at his best. I back him and his ability.” And on fan criticism of players in general… “This season more than any other in my career (I’ve said to players) ‘we need you to play.’ Now I don’t want get the violins out and feel sorry for ourselves but it’s the reality of the position due to lack of depth. That’s why I always compliment the players. Not everyone sees behind the scenes what they’re giving. Sometimes when a player goes out & plays and he’s not feeling great and then doesn’t to perform to the level he wants to gets criticism for it. And you’re thinking ‘he’s actually playing for the club here, he’s not playing for himself. That’s difficult to take if you are the player. “That’s where it’s my job to protect them because these lads are giving everything, and have given everything this year. For me they deserve some protection & support. These are top players and were outstanding last season consistently when fully fit. We need to support them through this period, nurse them back to their very best, because they can make the difference for us. I love my players and want to help them in every way.”

Displayname
How about a change in formation? You got to be a little creative when the alternative is letting a semi-fit player play every single minute this year.

HawK
Bit of a learning moment from me that, I always jump to the lazy/disinterested/moody/unhappy/doesn't like the manager reasons for players who seem to be underperforming for periods. Playing through injuries must be a lot more common that I would have thought from playing FM at least. On FM you always send them to a specialist rather than do injections, and just play the 16 year olds to keep everyone happy. But it's not your livelihood on the line and you can't save-scum IRL. Matt1892
Playing an injured Longstaff, who is offering nothing out there over a fit Miley, on the grounds of having to look after him because he is only 17 is baffling.
TBG
Especially when Hall can play in midfield as well.
The College Dropout
It’s understandable in Howe land where you must play 3 in midfield and if you can run - you should play. But genuinely - I can see where he’s coming from. Even if I disagree with it.

Yorkie
Baffling! There's an established precedent for not running promising academy players into the ground. It's not as if Miley is miles better than him, either, decent though he is.
The College Dropout
Longstaff carrying the but playing every single minute is the only thing I don’t understand. Starting and going 70 sure. But 90 minutes game in game out. Ok man.

Matt1892
Are Zaire-Emery and Kobbie Mainoo being ran in to the ground by being regular starters for their club? Or is it that they are good enough so should play? Maybe they are 18 which suddenly makes a world of difference when you blow the candles out on the cake. What nonsense. OoOGazOoO
I think Eddie alluded to the fact that Longstaff has been playing below-par, in his press conference, without actually saying "Yeh he's been average". Fair play if he has been playing through injury, but without being harsh, playing through a niggle isn't ideal, but I am pretty sure that doesn't result in you lacking impulse, mis-placing 6 yard passes and falling over every 5 minutes. Gallowgate Toon
Miley might be nursing niggles himself.

The difference between 17 and 18 is a lot greater than the difference between 27 and 28; it's a critical period of growth as a human let alone a footballer. It's not a good comparator anyway, seeing as Miley has played far more football this season than Mainoo - at absolutely ridiculous intensity during some stretches, too. Of course he was going to be rested as soon as it was possible for the manager to do so.
