Guest HTT II
No excuse for any pro to be one footed, it’s easily rectified with practice. My 7 year old is genuinely two footed because he practices and most importantly has been given the confidence to use his other foot. I practiced using a wall for hours on end a day and my left foot is stronger than my right. Edited May 10, 2021 by HTT II
ToonArmy1892
He plays like a kid on the playground, occasionally that can be a good thing, but he needs to be more streetwise at times. He runs down dead ends away from support too much. Not that he will get any guidance from Brewcy.

I guess it never gets focused on when they're younger if they're good enough with the one foot.

My boy does one to one stuff with a former NUFC academy player and NUFC’s current under 9s/8s/7s coach, he’s brilliant, he encourages using “the other foot” as much as possible and refuses to say ‘weaker foot’, since the 1 on 1s my boy’s left foot is all natural, it’s all about trusting it and having the confidence to use it and that’s what isn’t encouraged even in the pro game, play to strengths, do basics well etc. is usual mantra. Kids especially when playing need taken out of their comfort zone, they need to play every position, be challenged and allowed to make mistakes and have weaknesses being told and worked on, being one footed, at any level is an inexcusable weakness, however, because again it’s easily rectified. If I, a shitty 41 year old playing street football and with my mates all my life is genuinely two footed and my 7 year old who has only been playing 2 years is the same, it says a lot that so many pro players are one footed. It's just the elite levels where their weaker foot is more obvious.

That’s an astute point, but I’ve found watching grassroots footy even at men’s level, a lot of players use their other foot a lot more regardless of how good or bad they are than pro/elite players. I do wonder if a lot of players play in the comfort zone, and are so programmed to play a certain way/do things a certain way it takes away from their overall game when it comes to playing another way, using the other foot etc. Coaching plays a big part too, that’s why a Rafa is someone any player should love to work with to improve their game and even tactical knowledge and physical fitness etc.
Shearergol
Out of interest, who are we thinking are the most one-footed players in the league? Is it actually mainly left footed players as claimed?

I mean they're scored 22 right footed goals between them (out of 161) so I think it's a bit unfair to claim they didn't develop them as juniors Interested topic though, got me thinking about whether left footers are definitely more one-footed for some reason. Rafalove
Definitely Miggy. I love him to bits but it really does slow down play sometimes With him always having to come back on his left

Lefties are rare. They can ply a skill that 9/10 men can't - proper left foot shots. Couple that with the fact that they shape their body up a little bit differently to most players they can be a bit special if they have a good touch. Their rarity probably just leads to coaches being more likely to overlook their weaknesses. As a side note, you might've noticed that left footers are overrepresented in the brilliant dribblers category. Well, I've heard that left-handedism is regarded as a maladaption of sorts and is correlated (probably not strongly) with both genius and retardation. So it might be that left-footedness also gives one an increased chance of just being a genius in the field. For example, there might be correlation between being a lefty and having heightened peripheral vision or something.
Tsunami
I’m left footed/ right handed. Played Left Wing then Centre Forward and hitting a ball cleanly with my right was a real lottery. I could practice and strike the ball “mechanically” but nothing felt natural about it. I believe you’re either naturally two footed or not - you either have to think about it or you don’t. I do think that left footers hit the ball slightly differently, often seems a “better” connection somehow.
Tsunami
Something else, I always generated more power heading to the right than the left, not massively but enough.

Very few professional football players are totally two footed. Think about how many alternate their feet on set pieces etc. I can remember Cazorla would take them with both, but not many others. It's hard to create that same level of accuracy, whip, power etc no matter how much you practice. I'd say they majority are competent on both feet though, if you gave Mahrez for example a shooting drill on his right foot he'd probably finish the majority of them and look fairly comfortable. In a high intense game where you're running at full speed with a second or two to think and Van Dijk trying to push you off the ball it's a different story. The lack of technique is much more magnified in a pressure situation.

Nah it’s about working the other foot to become naturally able to use it, it’s a body part, memory plays a big part and of course repetition etc.
Billy Pilgrim
Everyone coming through now should at least be able to pass, dribble, control and finish with their weaker foot. The next level up is a decent cross and beyond that the natural two footers who take set pieces with either. Half the time with your weaker foot (was always my left) it’s about not over thinking it and doing things on autopilot. I could always finish or pass decent with my left foot but I’d never take a corner with it, and I wouldn’t use it if I had to hit the ball hard for whatever reason. Astroblack
Antonio Valencia is the most one footed player I’ve ever seen. Refused to use his left!
