Miguel Almirón - To Travel to Atlanta United Prior to $12M Move (Romano)

I'll wish Miggy all the best, he gave it his all, but as a PL footballer he was very limited. He had two big limitations, and in my opinion his one-footedness wasn't the biggest, it was that this was his vision when he had the ball -

That's why he gets no assists, he didn't know where anyone was. As purely an inside forward and someone who should end all possessions with a shot, you can get away with this, but you need to be more than this.

He might do better in a slower league where he'll be pressed less and give him a chance to get his head up.

I got pelters once for saying it, but for me he’s the embodiment of the unintelligent (in football terms) winger, in part for this reason.  Good footballers do not spend their time on the ball staring at the thing - their head is up; control is a given.

edit: I do wish the lad all the best, he always gave 100% and seems like a canny soul.  I’m glad he’s going somewhere he’ll be happy and adored - seems like a happy outcome.

What was he then? He never had anything like the intelligence or the talent required to be a #10 at this level. He’ll be remembered, rightly, as a tenacious a wide player as you’ll ever see who frustrated more than he succeeded but played a big part in our best season in 20 years.

Yep.  Just because he played as a sort of second striker/10 in the MLS.  Doesn't mean he was ever going to play as one here.

His lack of assists, the constant running into blind alleys, lack of key passes and general pass appreciation.  Leads me to believe he would have been dreadful as a number 10 here in a proper league.  Not that we have played with a recognised number 10/AM type since he's been here, anyway.

The most promising role he had.  Was that very short period where he and Perez played off Rondon.  More centrally, admittedly and they weren't playing as wingers/wide forwards.  Perhaps closer to what Wolves do or even Amorim with his two number 10s.  But I can't say I remember him ever looking creative or incisive during that spell or during his entire time here, even.

The sadist in me wants to see it again to remind myself how fucking bad it was.

I’ve never watched any of our cup final defeats afterwards - not even highlights - but that burns in the brain.  Maybe it’s not as bad as I remember, but I’m fucked if I’m rewatching it.

Nah, it really is that bad. :D

I still wish we could've seen what he could do under Rafa for longer. I'm sure this has been done to death but we looked so good when he arrived on the left of that front three with Rondon and Perez.

I understand ASM rightly had first dibs on his best position and maybe it was just the novelty of having someone busting a gut to impress, but Miggy looked so exciting when he arrived. Even if it wasn't translating to goals and assists he almost seemed to be the assist to the assist every week or so.

No doubt a great servant and can never fault his commitment.

He was instrumental in our upturn with his relentless pressing and his sensational purple patch.

As the team continues to evolve though, his limitations become more evident. With his ideal move coming along, it seems like a natural time to part ways.

Good luck Miggy.

Anyway he was a huge part of our qualification for the CL. Question the mentality of those shitting on his limitations. Everyone knows.

Reflecting on a player’s career at the club seems like the most natural reaction to a player leaving.  It is the time for an assessment of the successes and failures - if others want to treat it as a time to write nice things like it’s a high school yearbook then I’ve no issue with that.  I’ve never criticised a player at a match nor in any way which they’d have visibility (unless they search for themselves on somewhere like here).  It’s not about shitting on his limitations, but I also don’t think it should be about overstating his virtues.

It’s just so gratuitous. There’s so much negativity on here. Joyless support at times.
