Miguel Almirón

Deuce

Recommended Posts

Everyone knows he's one-footed, especially Eddie Howe. It's not like he's going to be shocked that Miggy prefers to cut back on his left.

He's obviously judged that what he offers is worth the sacrifice.

We also know that in a year or two he won't be starting for us, it was just a question of who we wanted to (and could) buy right now.

Just wish that while he's playing he could get a bit more respect for the stuff he can do rather than constant fixation on his weaknesses.

The thing with Almiron is that he is someone that can be well drilled to carry out a task…

Link up with Trippier for him to overlap.

Give and go for Bruno to lob over.

Press like a mad man and track back.

This is all great but it doesn’t take away from him being an average player for us apart from an outstanding month last season, he creates very little for team mates in terms of attacking threat and if Transfermarkt are correct and he only had 5 Premier League assists in all of his time here then that really is indefensible. Bruce or not.

I’m not saying he is the worst player in the world as he isn't; however if we want to improve then we need better players and if people don’t think wide right is the next attacking position we need to upgrade on then which attacking position do we upgrade?

Think most agree that his position is one that we are going to prioritize next. Perfectly fine with having him in the first team this season though, unlike some others it would seem.

PS.

Dont underestimate the Bruce part.

Howe hasn't bought Gordon and Barnes to exclusively fight for one position - I think Howe is pretty happy with the wing options he has and there's tactical flexibility there for when he wants to explore it. Whether that's right or wrong will be proven over the next few months but he's dropped/rotated Miggy before and will again as his limitations don't suit every match.

If we played Sunday's game halfway through the season with the same squad, I don't think Miggy plays the full 90 either.

I think he was really unlucky with the wonder save from Allison on the volley, and on the one that hit the post, it was a great run in the lead up to cutting in and shooting.

One of those goes in and we're all going crazy, as either would have been great goals. However they didn't, unfortunately.

And so when you then look at the other general bits of play it's a bit frustrating because so many simple or straightforward things he could do to put us in better positions, he can often not get right.

True. I think I may have missed the post chance.  I had to leave around 83/84 minute.

Not sure if these posts are parodies or not anymore. Didnt offer any threat?

All our players struggled with build up play that game. Almiron atleast got into threatining positions and created some threat by himself aswell.

Almiron is one of 3 attackers in our team.  It’s his job to create and finish chances for the team.  From what I saw he did a great job to get on the end of chances but he didn’t score them. those chances came from good work on the left which we didn’t get from the right at all.

In general play I don’t think he offered much at all going forward in terms of chance creation.

I gave him credit for his off the ball work offensively and defensively.  He just lacks that bit of quality imo.

While I hope that’s not the case. The only evidence we have so far is that Gordon and Barnes are fighting for one position.  Neither has spent a single minute anywhere but LW.

Gordon played 3 different positions for us last season. If Barnes joins the squad earlier then I don't think we see him eased in either. Feels pretty situational to me which has just been exacerbated by Gordon's start to the campaign.

He did have very good link up play with Bruno and Tripper first half of last season. Are we sure that Almiron is solely at fault for it not existing lately?

I think managers have clocked on to that and have plans in place to prevent it from succeeding.

What 3 positions? He moved due to a mini injury crisis in a dead rubber. But competitively he seems to have played predominantly on the left. He played a lot at RW for Everton though.

Unfortunately, due to our FFP restrictions, we've had to prioritise other positions. If we were allowed to spend freely I have no doubt we'd have brought in Diaby or someone of a similar stature with a bit more defensive responsibility.

Played on the right for his apps against West Ham (away), Brentford, Leeds and Man U. Took up central spots vs. Chelsea & Liverpool which were more enforced.

Edit: played AM against Bournemouth as well.

If you read my posts you'll see I pointed out specifically the good things Miggy did in the game, so no.

I agreed with his general observations on Miggy as a player.

My comment referred to that specific point and wasn’t aimed specifically at you. It’s perfectly fine to say Almiron can be upgraded upon, it’s not to suggest he carries no threat at all in games, be it in general or the Liverpool game specifically.

Aye but all of his starts in games apart from Chelsea (due to injuries) have been at LW. Last season he was behind Joelinton,  Isak and ASM for LW minutes but Howe wanted to give him minutes so he put him places.

I want him to play RW but the fact he’s not played a single minute there this season doesn’t indicate to me that is the current plan.  Not even 20 minutes.

I've been a big fan of Miggy and still think he'll get 10 this year but I just wish he was more direct and more willing to go on the outside a bit more even if that meant losing the ball a bit more. Everytime he cuts inside he holds up momentum and gives our opposition time to reorganise, it's a small flaw but one that I think really impacts our game.

Mate he doesn’t often beat defenders 1v1, he’s not an incisive passer.

He simply isn’t going to open teams up with his ability on a regular basis.  He doesn’t offer much threat in build up.

He has great movement and often gets himself into great positions to create or score. But he lacks the quality to consistently capitalise with a final ball or composed finish.

I think he lacks the ability to consistently finish the good chances he gets. I can see him being streaky when his confidence is up. But won’t be able to maintain it.

My mates try and tell me Howe will be sacked if we don’t get top 4. I reject it - we are still starting Almiron. He has some great attributes but do you think he’s a top 4 player? Murphy seems to be his backup. We got Dan Burn and a kid at LB.  Dan Burn and Lascelles as backup CBs. We’ve not got a single creative midfielder type player. So far it’s looking like Anthony Gordon. Based on the quality of the squad and its demands 6th-7th wouldn’t be unreasonable depending on how things pan out.

It's a very early and a small sample from this season to definitively say that Howe's only plan for 2 relatively big purchases is that they won't play in the same team together. He's referenced Gordon's versatility when he signed him as well:

"He will give us a lot. He's a young player with huge attributes, huge potential, to have a big impact on our season. A very quick, dynamic player, who's versatile and can play off both sides. The best is yet to come from him."

Miggy's place is by no means locked down which we saw that at the back end of last season. Barnes is too specialist for the right I think but I don't see any reason why Gordon wouldn't ever be in the mix.

I agree. And I hope that’s the plan. But I haven’t seen any actual evidence of that. In 3 very different fixtures we didn’t give it a go for even 10 minutes. So far Howe has been pretty rigid in our formation and substitutions.

To be fair, there are lots of things we've not tried that we did last season - I'm sure that'll be down to the squad not being on a level playing field yet for fitness/sharpness/tactics. Barnes is new to our way of playing and missed preseason games so will be short of fitness. While Gordon looks in good shape, he's a player that's historically gassed out at about 70 mins so they might be trying to build up that extra level of fitness for him to stay on and move to another position when we look to make subs.

We bought 2 LW’s over the course of 2 transfer windows with the cheapest costing a reported £7 million though.

If we wanted Diaby we could have gone for him instead of Barnes, who is looking like being an expensive back up to Gordon.

Yes we could have got Diaby instead of Barnes, I don't think anyone can dispute it, but obviously Howe likes Barnes more. It really comes down to who the manager thinks will fit our system best, and both Gordon and Barnes were long term targets. I'm assuming Howe doesn't rate Diaby's defensive contributions, and that would rule him out for our playing style.

There's also a case of what happens when Willock is back as the two Joe's seemed his first choice setup on that left hand side last season and worked really well.

Probably get a much better idea after the International break when we have a much kinder run of fixtures. Could definitely see Barnes and Gordon starting together in some of those.

Think people are over reading the gordon/barnes thing. We have played 3 of last seasons top 6, obviously howe wasn't making many changes and values miggys workrate(Gordon's too) no doubt we will see them both start more soon, hall too but it's as hard a start as it gets. Certain amount of known quantity with his selections. Dare say fully fit longstaff or willock may have had tonali wait too
