We’re getting no further information out of anyone about the much reported takeover but going over some reporting over the last fortnight we spotted this and thought it might be useful to chuck in to the pot for us to have a think about.

This was in The Star last week from Ollie Salt who quoted Duncan Castle – a fellow hack regards some potential sticking points regards two clubs in the PL being run by Abu Dhabi:

“Talking to people in Abu Dhabi, they would be surprised if at this stage Abu Dhabi would sanction, allow another member of the royal family, even if he was doing it off his own back, to buy another Premier League club because of the PR issues involved. If you have to go in, there are gonna be question marks about Abu Dhabi owning not one, but two [clubs]. You would expect a lot of spending on players, you would expect an inflation-rate effect. The question you’re asking: is this really the time to allow this to happen, when they’re under investigation from all four football-regulatory authorities? The alternative interpretation would be that they’re saying ‘well stuff you, we’re gonna buy another one and we’ll do what we want.’

Castles identifies problems at the Abu Dhabi end but it is also likely the PL will have questions about the relationships between owners of potentially the same families from the same royal family.

All speculation on our part however.

It was never £80m really though, was it?

It was. Albeit that was probably (from memory) a one week window. You have to remember back in 2009, none of us had the confidence that if you go down you come straight back up. I remember watching that WBA game first day of the season when they scored, thought we were going to drop again. If we went down next season, I imagine a lot of fans wouldn't be too concerned, given that the two promotion seasons have generally been more enjoyable than anything else.

It was £80m + new owners taking on the debt.

It wasn't. It was £1 for the shares and £80m for the debt.

By your reckoning, that was £80m for the club, and the debt was about £110m at the time, so £190m.

Sounds bizarre, but £80m was genuinely the price. It was £100m for most of the sale process though, and I'm not convinced that it would have gone for £80m if I'm honest.

So Mike Ashley who had bought the club 2 years previously was prepared to write off £135m of debt he took on and accumulated and another £45m on what he bought the club for (£125m).  Don't believe that for a second.

The Mag is fucking abysmal now. The fact that people just submit articles online rather than having to post them in and having a limit on articles per month has opened it up to every idiots immediate reaction. They make it so much worse by writing headlines which gives the impression that they are facts they are sharing and not options. Obviously this is done in order to get the click bait reactions.

It’s just horrific though, just what was a light hearted fan magazine that turned into an advertisement revenue generator for the owners of the Mag.

He bought an established premier league club for circa £130m. At the time I think we had about £70m Northern Rock debt, which needed to be paid off. At the point the sale was being negotiated, we had just been relegated. Numbers wise, it's spot on. This was back in 2009 in the aftermath of Portsmouth/Leeds etc.

Honestly, that was the deal. As I said above, several parties had the £100m figure, the £80m figure literally came out at the last minute. But it was never £80m plus debt.
