Becuase in theory across both full backs, we’ve got 4 in Krafth/Hall/Tino/Trippier, latter two can play LB if needed.

Basically got numbers, so unless a legit top class LB is available for a deal that can’t be passed on, it’s not needed. Would also need to move one of those 4 on.

Think that's leaving us very short. Think we need Trippier & Tino RB, new signing & Hall LB, and Krafth as cover.

If the options are cb & RW that can play up top or a straight up striker then target is fine. If we are going for a few positions then aye selling a few is very much needed.

Not sure I agree with this.

He presses really well and he intercepts a lot of balls. He forces the opposition to play backwards or sideways and can win it either in the tackle or interceptions. He's a real presence and a force. And in the middle third he can just run and run with the ball. That's how he (and Willock) progress with the ball... just run with it.

I know the opposition was weak but the Sunderland game sums up Joelinton's strengths. When he was on they just couldn't build anything meaningful in midfield. Every contested loose ball was his, the Sunderland midfield could never do what they wanted to do when he was around. And when he got on the ball he drove us forward with his running.

As soon as he want off. Sunderland started finding pockets to play. They had that bit more time on the ball and we were that bit poorer on the transition.

He's a big part of the type of side Howe wants to build IMO. Top teams might be able to out football us but with Tonali-Bruno-Joelinton-Gordon-Miggy you can't outrun, out strength or out battle us. We'll beat a number of teams through sheer midfield physicality.

We need to get more of that physicality in defence.

You can’t judge his input from the one game though. He doesn’t do progressive passes, the stats show that. He also only really makes his tackles in our defensive 3rd.

The running thing for sure seems a Howe preference. He clearly likes players who can run the ball up the field rather than those who pass it. It’s a trade off, running it is less risky in that a pass can be intercepted, but passing it quickly through the lines is a much faster way of attacking. Better teams than us do this.
Over time, we may change. It’s early days for us so far.

We aren’t signing a LB man [emoji38]

Any reason why not?

Plenty of reports linking us with Lloyd Kelly and he's mainly played LB this season. Obviously he's also a CB but I'd not be even slightly surprised to see us start next season with one of or both Schar and Burn at CB with a new LB and either Tripps or Tino at RB.

Edit: just saw your previous reply.

But he also intercepts and presses a lot. I think he does that in the middle third a lot. the pressing forces poor passes from the opposition and turnovers.

He’s also like a target man in midfield. You can launch the ball towards him and very often he actually gains possession from it and not just flick it forward and hope for the best.

He really is a unique player, physically dominant but also has a very good technique and touch due to his background playing further up the pitch. General passing is his only weakness but I can see him getting better and better at that too. That’s the one thing that shows he has only played a couple of seasons deeper but he’s really motivated to get better based on hiring individual coaching during the dark days.

His versatility is also very important, you can play him pretty much anywhere outside of defense and you can expect to get a good performance. Hope the new contract gets confirmed soon, would be massive.
