You can't judge Bunce off Wilson's fitness. Bloke blinks and breaks his back.

It's like judging a teacher on how much Latin your pet donkey has learned.

Anyone get the impression they’re possibly saving him/keeping him in cotton wool to sell in Jan? I was told by someone who knows him that his relationship with us was effectively over anyway - last year of contract, fall outs with Howe etc.

Find that almost as hard to believe as the idea that we could sell him in January.

Only have ourselves to blame

Need to be a bit more proactive sometimes, rather than clinging onto someone because they had a good spell. Some players may have been difficult to sell, but with Wilson I think there would have been interest last year.

Do you reckon we've ever had any concrete offers? The was some noise about Chelsea () this time last year but I honestly find it so doubtful that anyone would offer meaningful cash for him.

There might have been interest in the summer post-22/23 but he'd gone most of that season without injury and was our top scorer. I think it would be harsh to throw any dirt at us for deciding to keep him at that point.

I take a harsh view but I think at some point one needs to make clear that the club wishes to move you on. I understand why some managers don’t want to be like that. I’ve no idea if we’ve received offers; I mean more that we’ve not purchased a reliably decent back-up striker knowing that Wilson is a cripple for the ages. Osula isn’t really that plan.

As Howe talks about relating to injuries, he keeps repeating that we need to learn from the past. The injury problems last season was seen by many as sheer bad luck and we were forced into do everything we did, but Howe clearly feels like they could've done something differently, even when every decision had a reasonable explanation.

Where I'm going with this is that we can look back at players like Almiron, Trippier and Wilson, and think about how selling them not so long after their last good spell would potensially have been great. Maybe the club wanted to, and there were no good enough bids, and in that case there club wasn't really at fault. But it's atleast something to think about, especially if they were fixated on someone having had a good patch, and expected it to come back. An important context here being that all of them are past 30, so a sudden drop off isn't uncommon. You'd think that we'd have a mindset of "what will probably happen tomorrow?" rather than "what happened yesterday?". I understand that it's hard to identify when someone has a high chance of dropping off the next season, but I think it's possible. The 18 goal season for Wilson was highly unusual for him, it was unlikely for him to avoid injury problems for another season.

The biggest issue would probably be to afford a replacement as we wouldn't have gotten that much for any of those. That's where we need a good scouting network.

Giving Dyer & Woodgate a run for their money here like.

I’d wager Dyer’s availability was miles better than Wilson’s has been. Wilson is clocking in at 40-odd% of our games played in his time here. Dyer will be higher. Woodgate - accept that.

I was only a teenager at the time but my memory of Dyer’s injury problems were that it was always the same recurring injuries and they were always at the worst times. Sporting Lisbon springs to mind.

Wilson seems to consistently have a multitude of different injuries.

At the time the treatment methods probably still wasn't as good as today, which makes it even worse.

Think he had shin splints at one point. Either way, he looks like he’s got Milner levels of reliability when compared with Plastercast Callum.

So you’re saying he’s going to play 142 games in the next 3 years?

Absolutely - a few cybernetic enhancements and Wilson 2.0 will be ready. I’m sure he’ll still manage to be more mobile than latter years Shola, Carroll and Kuqi:

There is zero chance any club is going to offer a fee for him.

There’s very little chance they’ll take him on a free as he wont pass any medical
