The players are employees and the nature of football transfer is mercenary. What goes on on the pitch in 5 days time takes precedent over the future of the clubs/sport for the next 5 years or 5 decades. I'd have thought a hot shot lawyer would be able to successfully argue the intention was never to impact the competition within the league and that the award of finishing first (i.e. Champions League) is outside of the stretch of these rules. Even in the event that the league had gone ahead and the clubs used youth/reserve players on a Saturday then as long as they were in a registered squad (and there would no doubt be a different squad for each competition the same way there is for European competition now) then they would be within the letter of the regulations Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

A number of the "Big 6" clubs likely joined the ESL because they have substantial debts and require Champions League revenues to service those debts; that the rise of other clubs threatens their qualification for European competition and thereby threatens the solvency of those clubs (as they would be unable to service their debts). Since they were likely joining the Super League to fix their financial issues, I suggest the Premier League impose a salary cap on those (ESL member) clubs for a period of 5 years and a further 5 years of Financial Fair Play auditing to assist them in repairing their financial issues. Hopefully Kane goes this summer and their post Mourinho appointment is another disaster. The loss of revenue and their stadium debt with continued off the field poor showings will hopefully force them to scale back.
