14 PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS PLOT PUNISHMENTS FOR BREAKAWAY SIX

There is a difference of opinion among the group of 14 Premier League clubs about whether there should be sanctions against the 'big six', now that they have abandoned their plans for a European Super League, Sky Sports News has been told.

One senior club official has told Sky Sports News that they want to pursue the possibility of punishments, because they feel there is a clear breach of Premier League rules, and a precedent must be set to act as a deterrent to possible future breakaways.

Rule L9 says any member club needs prior written approval by the Premier League Board to enter a new competition, and this official says that rule has “patently been broken” by the rebels signing an agreement to join the Super League.

An executive at another Premier League club has told Sky Sports News that any sanction imposed on the 'big six', such as points deductions or fines would hurt the wrong people - the players, managers and, crucially, the fans of those clubs.

Instead, they advocate the Premier League rules being tightened for the future, but they say the 'big six' should be welcomed back into the Premier League fold quickly, because “there has to be a measure of realism” here, with those six so crucial to the “overall commercial and sporting success” of the league.

There is likely to be another meeting of the 14 Premier League clubs - possibly even later today - to discuss what should happen next.

Abusive partner promises they won’t do it again, after doing it again.

Makes me laugh that people and fans of these clubs are saying *don’t punish them* - it just punishes the team when the owners have done wrong

Sure the punishment for FFP , Not punishing fans for racism, and a whole lot more are punished by points reductions...?

If players don’t want to be part of this shit then put in a transfer request

Yup - no such cry out when the likes of Luton, Darlington, Wigan, Gateshead, etc got battered down the leagues for dodgy owners.

Fuck this lot - hoy the book at them. Make sure it never happens again.

To show how these things ('big 4/5/6') are a 'moment in time' thing, look at the member list of that G-14 European superclubs thing which they introduced at the turn of the century.

Doesn't include Man City or Chelsea or Spurs. Originally didn't include Arsenal.

Includes Ajax, PSV, Marseille, Porto.

Oh, and included the modern day goliath that is Bayer Leverkusen.

Aye, but that’s the very reason why they wanted it in the first place. They know full well they’re up to their eyeballs in debt which can only be serviced if they are guaranteed the income related to competing at the top level. Since history has shown time and time again that these things ebb and flow and that there is absolutely no guarantee that they won’t be where Schalke is now a few years and a few bad decisions down the line, they thought they’d use their current power and influence to basically ensure they couldn’t be “caught offside” ever again, at the expense of others who might deserve their place in the future.
The EU needs to come down like a ton of bricks on Perez, Agnelli and all the others who conspired to set up what basically amounts to an industrial cartel. The anti competition commissioners normally isn’t shy to dish out hundreds of million or even billion euro fines to tech companies that try to do similar. They need to do the same here.

This thinking is why we are where we are at NUFC and football in general. The players are employees and the nature of football transfer is mercenary. What goes on on the pitch in 5 days time takes precedent over the future of the clubs/sport for the next 5 years or 5 decades. How it affected Paul Dummett in a weekend in April 2021 pales in significance.

The apologies will be accepted and they'll say it was just a mistake and probably brushed under the carpet.

Maybe get a minor fine or something but can't see the FA or anyone else having the balls to punish them

Scudamore, Masters and Premier League are cut from the same cloth as these 6 clubs. Premier League only kicked off as they feared losing their cash cow. They will talk tough in public but be bending over backward to appease the 6.

Really just wish they’d fucked off, would have made things exciting. These last two days have been great!

They have also surely broken this rule (part c)

Possibly, on the competition aspect.

I'd have thought a hot shot lawyer would be able to successfully argue the intention was never to impact the competition within the league and that the award of finishing first (i.e. Champions League) is outside of the stretch of these rules.

Even in the event that the league had gone ahead and the clubs used youth/reserve players on a Saturday then as long as they were in a registered squad (and there would no doubt be a different squad for each competition the same way there is for European competition now) then they would be within the letter of the regulations

Comrade Barnes depressing everyone there.

Super depressing, yeah. And all true unfortunately. At this point we're really all just pawns.

My suggestion...

A number of the "Big 6" clubs likely joined the ESL because they have substantial debts and require Champions League revenues to service those debts; that the rise of other clubs threatens their qualification for European competition and thereby threatens the solvency of those clubs (as they would be unable to service their debts).

Since they were likely joining the Super League to fix their financial issues, I suggest the Premier League impose a salary cap on those (ESL member) clubs for a period of 5 years and a further 5 years of Financial Fair Play auditing to assist them in repairing their financial issues.

Barnes is spot on.

In the short term, what we need is Arsenal and Tottenham to continue their demise. Hopefully Kane goes this summer and their post Mourinho appointment is another disaster. The loss of revenue and their stadium debt with continued off the field poor showings will hopefully force them to scale back. Same with Arsenal, hopefully more board level conflicts cause them to fail again and again.

Better sign Haaland for €150m, that should sort you out. That's how this works, right?

Hopefully that's in the past. Even if Laporta is certainly no stranger to these big dumb reactionary signings, in order to get the funding guarantees required to take over the presidency he's been forced to give up some financial control to the lenders.
