Bump

The chat around who our best ever centre back was for me thinking around our greatest XI in my lifetime anyway. There isn’t a right answer and some will be based on sentiment and how old the poster is, here is mine

GK - Given (3rd highest appearances all time, record PL appearances, 2002 and 2006 PFA team of the season)

CB - Coloccini (Former captain 2010 Championship PFA team of season and 2016 PL team of season)

CB - Burn (2025 Carabao Cup Final MOTM)

RB - Trippier (Former captain 2023 PFA team of the season)

LB - Livramento

CM - Bruno G (2025 Carabao Cup Final Captain)

CM - Lee (Former captain 1996 PFA team of the season)

RM - Beardsley (Captain, 1994 PFA team of the season)

LM - Ginola (1996 PFA team of the season)

ST - Ferdinand (1996 PFA player and team of the season)

ST - Shearer (Captain, All time goals, 1997 PFA player and team of the season, 2003 PFA team of the season)

I don’t think a keeper comes close to Given.  Centre back perhaps controversial and strongly considered Schar but just personally prefer Burn.  Woodgate was amazing in his short spell but didn’t do enough for us.  I don’t think Botman is anywhere near yet, too many injuries.

We have had a dearth of good full backs in my lifetime especially at left back where I was between Pearce, Enrique and Tino.  Really struggled with left back, maybe it will be Hall/could have been Hall if not for his injury last season.

Midfield was tough leaving out Speed, Batty, Cabaye and Tonali but feel Bruno and Lee have had overall higher peaks for us.  Even Dyer I think was exceptional when fit/not being a twat. Batty is perhaps the most underrated though, he was world class and we sold him too early.  Tonali also unlucky to miss out and could break in in time as he continues with us.  Rob Lee was ridiculously good though for a long period and could tackle, is still 3rd all time PL assists still for us and scored goals.  Bruno is perhaps my fave player of all time.

Ben Arfa I really considered though Ginola for me did more.  Solano was tougher to leave out with Robert a consideration too.  I’ve squeezed Beardsley in instead of another winger.

For me our best strikers from the PL era are Shearer, Ferdinand, Cole, Beardsley and Isak in that order.  Cole had the best single goal season and was toughest to leave out. Ferdinand and Shearer each however won player of the season wearing the 9.  Beardsley was absurdly good on his return in the early/mid 90s - 24 goals in 9394 alongside assists for the majority of Cole’s goals.  Isak never quite managed the output of the others and if not scoring went missing too often.  Cliche but Shearer is top for me peaking early in 1997, then revival under Bobby and overall longevity.  Ferdinand though is my favourite ever Newcastle number 9.

He meant 2012.

Looked up the 2016 team out of curiosity

GK   David de Gea   Manchester United

DF   Héctor Bellerín  Arsenal

DF   Toby Alderweireld  Tottenham Hotspur

DF   Wes Morgan   Leicester City

DF   Danny Rose Tottenham Hotspur

MF   Riyad Mahrez  Leicester City

MF   Dele Alli  Tottenham Hotspur

MF   N'Golo Kanté  Leicester City

MF   Dimitri Payet  West Ham United

FW   Jamie Vardy  Leicester City

FW   Harry Kane   Tottenham Hotspur

I'd forgotten Dele Alli and Danny Rose were so highly rated.

Surely either Solano or HBA are ahead of Dyer at RW?

I went off when they were at their best, for me Dyer was easily ahead of them both.

I can see where you're coming from and as I say I don't think we've had a truly great player in that position. I just think people forget, for all of his limitations, Dyer was one of the most important players in Robson's team; much more than Solano in my view.

Ooof. I'm biased but...

One was player of the year for the team that qualified to the CL.

The other scored 23 goals in 190 appearances.

If we went off stats then Ruel Fox would be in for goals and assists on the RW.

All about opinions🤔👍

Favourite players 11:

                           Pav

Nol Solano* Albert Schar Robbie Elliot

                Speed Bruno Ginola

                       Pedro

                      Sir Les

Subs:

Bracewell

Venison

Clark

Robert

Roeder

MCreery

Lee

* my MVP award still goes to Nobby.

It is quite hard to do this, but all of the above are players I have really enjoyed watching (for various reasons) and really wanted the best for. Some randoms who didn’t play that much like Helder, Roy Aitken and Woodgate came to mind too.

You've got to have Nobby in. Also gives the team set pieces, end product and crosses for Shearer. Surprisingly industrious and tough for a smaller framed guy too.:indi:

He was for me the epitome of 100% player. Maximum effort and incredible ‘football brain’. When we first signed him I went along to see him turn out for the reserves (and partially to see what Leazes Level 7 was like). Viewing his passing from that height, in a pretty empty stadium, was truly incredible. Don’t know how he even saw some of the long passing options let alone had the technical skill to execute them; truly a different class. I’ve no memory of who we were playing, who else was on the pitch, or whether we won, but I will always remember that first impression. Just beautiful football from a much underestimated master of the game.

McFaul

Nattrass

Moncur

Woodgate

Kennedy

Green

Bruno

Gascoigne

Bellamy

Beardsley

Isak

I wish I didn't have to pick the last guy, but I have to be honest. That front three together would be deadly.

The defenders may look like an old guy's sentimental choices, but for no particular reason I don't think we've produced outstanding defenders apart from Woodgate.

My dad always said Irving Nattrass was a cracking RB, and Alan Kennedy must be right up there in terms of our LBs, so makes sense to me tbh.  Before my time, though.
