Mowen
Bizarrely enough, if Villa beat Hull (and they should) I'd be a little bit more optimistic than I was this morning. We expected to get a right humping and Sunderland to pick up a point or maybe 3. The fact Sunderland played soooooo poorly in a game they would have considered winnable shows they've lost all confidence. They could quite easily lose their 3 remaining games and their goal difference will take a pounding. Hull could also fairly easily lose their last 4 but even if they draw against Stoke it means we could stay up by taking 4 more points. Results are going our way but we need to win a game. Beat Boro and Fulham and I think we'll reel in both of them. We're relying on other teams to continue to do us favours but ultimately we need to turn in a performance and win a game - preferably 2. Still not cut and dried either way but we're still in with a shout. Good post. It isn't over 'til it's over. I can't really see where the goals and wins are coming from, but what I can do is drink quite a lot of beer and hope everything'll be ok. I think I might take advantage of that capability. ElDiablo
Bolton are going to have a big say in it, play both Sunderland & Hull at home.
Superior Acuña
Slightly more confident than i was after last week. Expected a defeat today but thought Sunderland would get something - struggle to see them winning now. Losing Barton is a blow though, as I think he looks like someone who could create against Boro particularly. Is it possible to appeal just to delay the ban? Disco
All rests on Mondays game as Boro will have to attack. Against a moderately well organised defences we don't even look like scoring and that'll be the case against Fulham and Villa. We could also do with some fucking luck for a change. An OG or something.
S.S.R.
Hull's game tomorrow is more important than our game today. Never expected anything, but got the bonus of Barton not being able to let us down in the last three games.
Godot
I'll reserve my judgement until after Hull tomorrow. If they manage a win for me we're down.

Mowen
9, lose to boro, 10 Similar, but I'd say I'm probably about a 7 or an 8. Think we've got more than a 10% chance of sticking around.

We're one freak win for Sunderland or Hull away from being dead and buried. I think 10% is being pretty generous.
GM
The quality of football on offer from the bottom 5 is getting more dire by the game. Diabolical. I keep looking at the lads in black & white and thinking I'm watching Dunfermline instead.
gazzaA2
Win our remaining 3 games and we stay up. Anything less than 9 points and we're down. Realistically? We ARE down. Rubbish. two wins would see us safe and Boro and Fulham at home are winnable. We might only need 3 points against Boro next week to stay up, if Hull lose the rest of their games which looks likely. If we lose to Boro, then that's the time to panic but I can't see us losing to them.
Bad Mongo
As if win or defeat are our only options.
Guest
Hull's results tomorrow and against Stoke next week will determine whether the Boro game is a "must-win" or a "must not lose" match.

Guest
Haha, no! Just think Hull's results in their next 2 games will determine whether we need 4 or 6 points from Boro & Fulham.
Dave
We're already far too reliant on others. We need six points to go into the final day with a chance IMO.
Teasy
We're already far too reliant on others. We need six points to go into the final day with a chance IMO. I think six points would see us safe, Sunderland's last really winnable game was today and they went down without a wimper. Also I agree with Optimistic Nut, Hull's next two games are the only ones I can see them getting anything from. So we'll know by the Boro game exactly what we need to do. Having said that the Boro game will still be pretty much must win even IF Hull lose their next two, at the end of the day we have to start winning sometime of we're down. Dave
So we'll know by the Boro game exactly what we need to do. That's a definite positive of the way the fixtures are arranged.
midds
There's going to be an awful lot of fingers being crossed in the next week or 2. It's obviously not ideal that we're relying on others but if that's what we need to do to stay up then so be it. 3 points against Boro following up losses for Hull and Sunderland next weekend would be nice. ElDiablo
My mind seems to change every 5 mins, at the moment I think we've got a real shot of staying up. If we continue with the 4-2-3-1 formation i think we'll have enough to beat Boro as they'll play more open than Pompey did and we DO have the quality to score goals, especially with Viduka in the side. Owen's got to be back in for me and so has Jonas. If we beat Boro I genuinely think we'll pick up another win maybe even 4 points against 2 sides that will be playing out the season comfortably and without needing to fight for anything. Fulham won't get a Uefa spot and Villa have 5/6th sewn up. Villa are just the type of side we're good against too, a team that plays openly and not ridiculously aggressively. If we want it I don't think 3 points are out of the question there. But there's the stumbling block and the thought that brings me right back down to earth. We're fucking gutless and there's no leadership at all on the pitch, no fight, no determination, no creativity, no pace and above all little quality in key areas. I've literally changed my mind again whilst typing. It will be fucking tight, but don't give up yet you bloody bastards.

Razor
I'm now a 9, 10% chance. I wont be 10 unless it becomes mathematically impossible, though the sentiments are shared, we're pretty doomed unless theres some sort of miraculous recovery next week. GM
Excuse my ignorance on such matters, but is it completely out of the question that Shearer could re-register as a squad player and sub himself on as player-manager in a suitably heroic Henry V style - something like this: Our best chance, I think... I'm sure if he could if he wanted to. Just imagine: 90th minute at Villa Park, Sunderland are drawing with Chelsea, and at 0-0 we need to win to survive. Poor but strong Alan Smith shot hits off Milner and goes out for a corner. Shearer, with his suit on, rips off his shirt revealing the black and white, subs himself on for Duff and hits a bullet header in off the bar. What a legend he'd be.
