Genuine question.  Why would we choose to be sponsored by a company outside of Saudi? I could understand somewhat if it were a British/well known Worldwide company but being sponsored by another Middle Eastern countries company seems peculiar.

Wonder if it's someone PIF have investments in? How would that work and would that be treated the same way as a PIF owned company? 

 

Obviously win win for PIF as even if they don't own the company their shares will increase with our exposure you would expect.

Because NUFC is an investment, not a sportswashing vehicle a la Man City or PSG.  It’s not a vanity purchase.  The funniest part about watching the Delaneys of the world in the press losing their minds is that they clearly haven’t a fucking clue about what they’re looking at.  NUFC isn’t a vehicle to promote KSA, and wouldn’t be unless they become a super club.  And even if NUFC became KSA’s favourite club, it’s a tiny market audience.

 

I always thought we’d end up with someone like Qatar Airways or similar on the shirt.  They’ll use their political and economic connections to get sponsorship from other ME states for realpolitik purposes.  It makes perfect sense - why would you throw your own money at this?  Besides, other than Aramco (which is PIF-linked and would immediately cause issues while the club is being grown) how many genuinely international firms are KSA-owned?

 

Abu Dhabi and Qatar’s wealth is like a personal bank account for their leadership.  While KSA is a dictatorship, it’s still a country of tens of millions and the sovereign wealth fund is for investments which one day pay off, not as a slush fund to hoy at vanity projects.  Though of course the House of Saud aren’t exactly without personal cash.

You couldn’t argue at present that the club has the same stature internationally as Spurs - so the sponsorship deal was always going to be in the £20m+ bracket.  This was the number touted last summer too, until Fun88 negotiated the extra year before agreeing a break clause.

I don’t know about that, everywhere you go there are toon fans and unlike the rest of the corrupt 6 I don’t think you can say that about spurs.

Having lived in Asia and Africa for quite some time, I don't think I've ever come across one local who supports Spurs. Noticeable in Thailand at the moment that I'm starting to see more locals wearing Newcastle tops, not loads but much more than anytime in the past. Ari football, specialised football store over here, has a a lot of Newcastle tops instore. There's even a Fabian Schar murial on a wall (I can't remember if I saw first that posted on here or elsewhere).

But you’re both talking about anecdotal experience.  You’re NUFC fans so you’ll notice every time you see an NUFC top.
 

Spurs’ sponsorship deals are not arrived at because of the relationships their owners hold to those parties - they don’t need to worry about ‘fair market value’ at present.  If it was true that we have similar visibility then the market would be offering £40m deals left right and centre without a leg up from PIF.  

 

Have a look at the social media following Spurs has.  Then look at ours.  Last I checked we’re still behind Leicester, West Ham and Everton.

 

This isn’t about how big we are relative to each other in England - I don’t see Spurs as bigger than us, Villa or Everton.  But the idea that we have - at the moment - greater visibility just isn’t borne out by any tangible evidence.

Twitter followers is normally a decent indication of fan numbers. We have 2.5m, Spurs have 8.6m.

Yes naturally I'll notice Newcastle tops but I have also seen plenty of Man, Arsenal, City and Liverpool but very few Spurs tops. I have also mixed with a lot of locals over the years and never once come across a Spurs fan, they all support the other teams.

And you are talking about online presence which isn’t all of the world. On Twitter you can buy followers ffs.

 

Also if you think spurs deals with AIA weren’t influenced by Joe Lewis’s connections I have some magic beans available at reasonable prices.

I’ve worked with plenty of lads from all over the world doing what I do - Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool are the only clubs those from Asia and Africa I’ve worked with (and they’ll be above 150 people) have supported; I’ve never met a Man City fan.  But that doesn’t mean that they don’t have visibility, nor that they don’t have followers around the world.

 

I don’t doubt that soon enough the numbers will follow - though that will require trophies and years at the top end, not a single good season.  We’ll be there soon enough

Sorry, you’re right.  PIF, Staveley and Reuben must be absolutely fucking useless at business, then: there must be loads of sponsors out there queuing to give us more than what Spurs get, yet somehow they’re missing those deals.  After all, if the market offers us those deals - with no strings attached - then it passes the fair market value test.

 

And of course online followers isn’t proof of everything; it’s just one element.  Spurs must have bought the 6m more Twitter followers and 20m more Facebook followers.  Makes sense to me.  Same way that we must have bought the 2.5m followers more we have than Blackpool.

 

Given that we’re now more attractive to the international markets than Spurs on the basis of being on the verge of CL qualification - a competition they were in the final of just a few years back - does that mean Villa are bigger than Liverpool and Brentford bigger than Chelsea on the basis of league placing this season?

 

I’m being deliberately daft with those later examples, but we’ll surpass these clubs soon enough - but we’re deluding ourselves if we think we’re there just yet.  It’ll come - no doubt about it

Spurs were the first club we all thought we'd 'oust' from the big six, right? They're a decent club but not in the same bracket as Man City, Manchester, Liverpool or Arsenal. Chelsea's next in our sights, although we're arguably a much better side than them we've got a way to go before any top player is choosing us over them for sporting reasons alone.

Yeah, Spurs have been a fading force since Poch left. Their team is far too reliant on Kane, one injury to him or a sale and they’re going to slip even further away from the top six.

 

I think Chelsea will be back to being a top six team as soon as Poch goes there. It’s pretty sickening considering how much they’ve failed but if they get him I think the club will stabilise. 
 

Liverpool are an interesting one. They’re in the middle of a rebuild. If they don’t get their transfers right in the summer I think they could struggle again next season

If it's an airline I think it could be Gulf Air; Bahrain are essentially a client state of KSA, have a brand new airport which is running below capacity and is often used as a hub for travel into various airports into/out of KSA, as well as weekend travel for Saudi nationals and foreign expats for its compelling local culture. 

 

Could also be Dubai-based Emaar who are co-owners of Noon.

 I don't know if I'm being superficial or a traditionalist when I realise this is my key concern.  The additional revenue is canny n'all, like.
