Eddie Howe: To miss Palace (H) & Villa (A) after being Diagnosed with Pneumonia

Will never ever doubt this man again. Feel embarrassed for ever doing so.

3 windows without a first team signing and we are getting stronger and stronger.

Little point comparing him to Keegan considering the circumstances in which they took over, but Howe in 20/30 years will be spoke of in the same breath.

IIRC I never really felt the need to doubt him due to the simple logic of the situation. He was always going to be given the season at least, and therefore he was always going to turn it around.

With a worse ownership I would've been worried they would pull the trigger on him early, but I knew the club wouldn't do that.

One of the players mentioned that loads of them had received texts from him in their interview. You won’t convince me he’s not playing a reasonably significant part in tactical decisions pre game from his hospital bed or back at home if he’s now there.

Barnes also mentioned that they’re “so well drilled” all season that they know their roles even if he’s not directly around. I absolutely love that.

Isn't it possible that he's just done an incredibly good job of establishing a culture where everyone is ready and willing to do the right things in his absence?

It's a really good sign that players have been getting texts from him though, I heard it said in that Murphy and Pope interview.

Yep, has been our second best performing manager (points per game) for league games in PL era, for some time now. Getting close to being best. Including cup games, is already the best ever (modern era) in terms of win percentage.

Absolutely. And I’ll bet we won’t know the full story until he’s very much retired!

There's gonna be a few disappointed journalists when Eddie gives his first prematch press conference, and his response to questions around his illness is 'Whats important is to focus on how well the players and coaching staff did while I was away'

Aye, there's a few post retirement interviews I'll love to see if and when they finally come out. Got a horrible feeling there'll be a proper omerta from everyone who's spent much time with Howe though

Hahaha. Had to google omertà. Great word and perfect for him. Reckon he has some Italian ancestry.

He’s not under house arrest with his phone confiscated you know, he’s poorly. He can do what he wants man [emoji38]

I am definitely worried about how some supporters (and also PIF) will respond to inevitable downturns. Saw a Facebook comment on the NUFC CL post saying how this summer's priority should be Bellingham, Kane, and Rice. Expectations are going to go through the roof.

Just had a look and it's actually a bit eerie how similar Eddie's first 18 months are to SAF at Man United.

  • Took over a team near the bottom of the table in November
  • Ended up finishing 11th
  • Added a few new players (including Bruce) and they surprisingly finished 2nd in the league
    • They were never really in the title race, primarily due to too many draws

What happened next?

  • A big signing (Mark Hughes) and big expectations, but they regressed to 11th
  • In the third full season a number of big signings, but they struggled and discontent was rising. It would have been a popular decision for many halfway through that third full season if he had been sacked. But then they went on a run and won the FA Cup.
  • There were still doubts the next season when they finished sixth, but then they won the Cup Winners Cup.
  • They lost out on the title the next year but won the League Cup and European Super Cup.
  • They won the league title in 1992/93, Ferguson's seventh in charge.

I'm not sure a manager in the modern game would have survived the third or fourth year. There's only been five managers in the history of NUFC who have managed 200+ games and two of them were almost a century ago. There's no point in stability for stabilities sake, but with the right person in charge it can be a huge advantage compared to clubs that are constantly chopping and changing. We have a manager who will not be outworked by anyone in the league, who is not afraid to learn and evolve, and who I don't think views us as a stepping stone to anything bigger. I hope he is rewarded with patience when the time comes and I hope he's here for a very long time.

While we're digging up old posts it's very odd how much he's paralleling the Fergie timeline and also frustrating how the growing financial gap makes the title wins significantly less likely.

Apologies, I’m very confused. I was saying I think he’s still involved in tactics and planning but we will never know as it’s not the type of thing he’ll ever reveal. As someone suggested above, he’ll move the convo along to the team as soon as he’s back. Never mentioned him not using his phone?

Not sure where else to put this. But next year, I would love to aim for having a season without any decent periods of underperforming. I don't expect us to not have losing streaks, but to go an entire season without a 6-8 week rough patch would be great.

We need a deeper squad for that, and to manage injuries well. But if the recent uptick in confidence is genuine, and permanent then the result will hopefully be better consistency.

We've lost 2 consecutive games only once this season. The longest we've gone without winning is 4 games.

We've had periods where performances were ropey and/or we've suffered very unexpected losses, but overall we've been remarkably consistent.

If we've got Europe next year then we'll need a much better squad though aye
