 He wanted Tosin and Guehi and got neither and settled for Kelly. That’s not what I’d call backing your manager. Especially in a window he had to sell two players he didn’t want to.

Backing a manager is different to simply agreeing with his targets. You got to secure them.

100%, we ended the window wesker than it began, that wasn't Howes fault

TBF we tried for months to buy a player that palace didn't even want to sell. We showed too much willingness to back that transfer imo

He was backed summer 2023. From a collective point of view we’ve gone backwards since then. Last season has a tonne of mitigation of course.

Not going in to heavy as your last sentence you acknowledge the situation. I’d go further and and say we did great to to get 7th in a campaign that contained no rotational games in 6 in the UCL. No rotational games in either domestic cup competitions yet we beat both Manchester teams and were robbed from an another winnable semi when we played Chelsea. Only the best team ever knocking us out of the FAC on their own ground. That and us breaking our goal scoring record for a top flight season. I wouldn’t say we went backwards at all. Especially with what felt like 14 players available majority of the time.

We’ve spent nearly £200m gross since we finished 4th, right? Putting this on PSR is a stretch.

Spunking >100mm on Tonali and Barnes who, whatever you think of them, don’t really solve any problems, is inexcusable. Both are running at pretty substantial paper losses right now.

I worry a lot about the quality of his coaching team.

Tindall is the defensive coach - would any other club in the Premier League trust him to manage the defense?

Not sure if we have a set piece coach - if so, they’re also hopeless.

Also, unsure what the rest of Eddies team do, but I assume they’re all lower league who worked their way up with Bournemouth.

Anyway - he deserves the cup quarter final at the least. But lose that then surely he’s gone unless the owners are happy to write off this season.

So we needed an anti-storm device like Brentford had?

But you acknowledge we’ve gone backwards since spending a lot of money from that summer onwards?

We definitely seem to Have a more basic coaching staff than really elite clubs. But then, we haven’t been a really elite club for a long time.

I would like to see Howe go and recruit a couple of new coaches TBH, but I have no idea how a manager goes about doing that. Must managers are very close to their team and work with the same staff for years.

In their defence (despite me agreeing to a degree ref Barnes) they were bought under a strategy that wasn’t expected to be in play still. The strategy then was to have 2 HQ players in each position. You can debate the order in which you do that but you can’t argue we are strong at LW and now not suspended in midfield.

You lot are a scary bunch.

Clever stuff. But remember that it might not have necessarily have been the same person saying these two comically contrasting things.

That depends how involved he was in the transfer activity before then, including players being given contract extensions.

If he was largely hands-off or not particularly involved in which players we were chasing and how much we were willing to spend then fair enough, especially if our PSR position has not been laid out clearly for him. However, if he's gone into the last few transfer windows leading the charge with his eyes wide open then he has to take some of the responsibility for how those transfer windows played out.

Tonali was desperately needed, Longstaff was starting games for us. Sadly he got banned for a year.

I find the defence of it weird tbh. I think it’s clear it was the wrong signing given the needs of the team and our PSR issues.

We could have strengthened the squad by using the funds made available in a sensible way, rather than making a crazy bid for Guehi.

Tonali is not the midfielder we needed. A James Maddison would have been much more interesting given how we struggle against low blocks.

Because he has an extremely specific function that doesn’t appear to fit in our first XI. He’s good and I like him but it was a poor allocation of resources, given Jacob Murphy started today.

I don't think it needs defending tbh, his record and his impact speaks for itself.  Or it should anyway.

Well we need both. Maddison paired with Bruno and Longstaff would be suicide.

We signed one of the highest rated young midfielders in Europe, it was a great signing. The annoyance is that the betting thing happened and he couldn’t establish himself straight away.

A midfielder was desperately needed, not sure it was Tonali costing 55 million mind. Aware a lot of hindsight in that, but when you are up against PSR it may have been more prudent to get a cheaper option.

At this point, he’s in trouble. Should have been backed in summer for sure but some of his selections have been baffling. Tonali would have offered a lot more than longstaff today - we all know that. Whatever metrics he’s using to pick that midfield - he needs to try again.

Defence may have been the wrong term, but no one can convince me the 40 odd million we spent on him wouldn’t have been better spent on a RW.

People need to realise how big the implications are with replacing the manager mid season especially under our current circumstances.

A lot of moving around happened during the summer in terms of management, a lot of change. A shitshow of FFP calculation led to forced sales and then even worse - no serious incomings. No refreshing of the squad led us away from the high press as it’s not sustainable without consistent and intelligent recruitment and this is where we find ourselves.

We are heading for a reset next summer with the new set up, personally I’d give Howe that IF he can co exist with less power than he had that contributed to Staveley getting the boot. I’d like to see how Howe functions under a serious recruitment team, because no real club aiming to establish themselves as part of the elite lets the coach 100% build the team. We have to be more fluid in terms of incomings and outgoings and that includes management to.

Oh and people put far too much weight into league position finishes.
