I think he approached Wolves correctly in terms of playing his strongest team.

I just disagree on what that team was. Knowing we'd take lion's share of possession we didn't need Tonali and Joelinton together. Should've tried Ramsey or Miley in midfield to try and create more going forward.

Also, Barnes on the left because, up against that 'low block', we needed to get some shots to test soppy bollocks in goals. Trippier and Barnes on the right is an awful combination (more to do with Trippier than anything).

We’re never making a ‘refresh’ to the squad, particularly whilst Howe is here. Any suggestions of that are nonsense.

Howe likes a settled squad, takes a while to build trust with players and to ensure they are clear on his instructions.

He’s not bringing 6 first team players in during one window.

Tbf, that was forced upon him due to the behaviour of a certain individual. I don’t think he envisioned bringing that many in at the start of the window.

If we had mbappe in our squad do you think howe would play him or sit him on the bench for gordon because he doesn't trust him?

I think he'd genuinely stick him on the bench. 😂

He may well like a settled squad.  But surely he isn't going to offer new deals to the likes of Trippier and Krafth.  Schar I could maybe see getting another year.  I also think we'll lose 1-2 regular first teamers.  Along with Ramsdale going back, as it would be madness to sign him even for half the reported fee.

Isak still here, we’d have signed 5 because he clearly wanted a second striker.

Just think without Isak situation, the targets may have been different or we not signed someone like Ramsey.

I'm sure in the summer of 2024 was that we wanted to offer Dummett & Ritchie new deals, so I wouldn't put it past those two at least being offered some sort of contract.

Mbappe would play upfront and we'd all be talking about how shite he is because he doesn't press and we can't get the ball to him

Trippier has supposedly been wanting to leave and get a megabucks contract somewhere for a while.  At least that is how it has been portrayed in the media.  He'll be on 6 figures a week you would have thought, so not really comparable.

Krafth I could see it if it was a cheap option.  But he's had injury issues and Howe rarely uses him when he is available.  So I'd doubt that, too.

Nothing would surprise me honestly, as a club we love kicking a can.

Eddie isn't ruthless enough. I know he's got rid of plenty of first team players, but it's not like he's publicly slated any of them. Words are louder than actions and he needs to get stuck in.

He wanted to sign Wilson to a new deal this summer. Why do you think Trippier wouldn’t be on his list to keep when he can currently offer more than Wilson did in his final year?

I think the importance of time and circumstances is really being underestimated in our fanbase tbh. In some cases you could call it impatience or entitlement too.

Seeing loads of stuff about how we need to do this, that, and the other in terms of player recruitment to get to where we need to be.

All fair enough if that's your view, but at the same time, we've just done that and it's only half a season later. A fixture packed, initially disrupted, and injury hit half season at that. One where the time to get the new players up to speed has been limited by games themselves.

Say we overhauled in the summer again, is that how long you give to decide on whether it's worked or not, regardless of the circumstances?

I just can't get my head around witnessing what we've had under Howe - not least the amount of times he's made people jumping to early conclusions on everything (but in this case player recruitment) look daft - and still coming to the conclusion that this time it's different.

It's nothing to do with what we've done in the summer IMO.  Even if the jury is out on most of those transfers.  Which is fair enough, considering it is only half a season in.

More that we have needed a keeper for a while and the defence has been spoken about for a while and they're now all a year older and I am concerned that we will lose 1-2 of our big names, for various reasons.  Hence why it feels like we might need a mini rebuild if we were to lose say Tonali and/or Livramento.  Along with the likes of Trippier, Krafth, Schar, Ramsdale, Lascelles (does he count) and whoever else, Willock, perhaps?

The aim of the previous window was to increase the depth IMO. None of the signings were really intended to take the first team up a level. Then that was complicated a lot by the actions of the rat.

“So the objective for this transfer window is not to take the first team up a level - no improvements at all. Simply less good versions of what we have right now, but more of them” - Andy Howe

Well not a generous way to put it, but our squad was desperately weak for the amount of competitions we were going to be in. I feel like it’s pretty clear that the aim was to raise the overall quality of the squad.

We also didn’t know that Wissa and Ramsey would be injured and Elanga would be shit.

Pleased you've wrote this as it sums up my current stance, which I've tried to type on here a few times then fucked it off because I struggled to get my point across and/or couldn't be arsed with the debate.

If that's how you're looking at it that definitely makes a lot more sense than what I've seen centred around our new signings. I think a new 'keeper is a dead cert in the summer, so I'm not worried about that one personally. Might not be a particularly popular opinion as well, but if the money is right I'm not overly worried about losing Tino. Not to the extent where I think he would be irreplaceable anyway. Tonali is a bit different, but I think the midfield needs work regardless of whether he stays or goes. My hope is that for all the attempts at floor raising in the summer, we get back to focussing on ceiling raising targets next.
