If I was on the board, I’d be ok-ish with having a season which didn’t work after a poor window, given the previous seasons which Howe has had with the club.  What I would want to know is what he plans to do to change it, who he needs to get there and who needs to be sold to accomplish it.

The most disappointing part of the summer window isn’t just that the signings weren’t great, they were ‘more of the same’.  New ideas needed for me - and there’s no reason Howe isn’t the man to do that.

Completely agree, you need to evolve as a team.

The lack of creativity in the side is absolutely crippling us.

Think most of us acknowledged we needed that type of player and many were up for giving El Khannouss a shot for that reason.

We’ve a midfield full of runners and seem to persist with getting balls to wide areas, which tends to lead to nothing. It’s on Howe to sort, but we’re now late January and nothing is changing.

Howe thought we were better second half than first half, not sure where he's got that from tbh.

We were better in the second half in our all round play. Didn’t create as much though.

We only have Hall or Bruno who can pick a pass or go past a player. The rest of the side is devoid of creativity.

Are you serious? You think we were better in the second half compared with the first half? In what ways?

I think it was pretty clear that we were more in control of the game in the second half, and played it in their half, albeit without creating much of note. First half we had a few nice attacking moments but Villa were more in control and played it in our half.

I do think we had more purpose second half but it was all pretty power puff and we never really looked like scoring.

I think Villa controlled the second half without the ball. Did we have a shot on target in the 2nd half?

Its not a Villa controlling. We did even less against the worst team in the league last week

I would be happy having a ‘transitional’ season if there were any signs we were actually transiting but we seem to still be trying to find Isak - he’s gone.

There are two ways you can take this season.

1) After a difficult summer of executive absence and one of our very best striking, being sold and replaced late on,  you can accept that this was always likely to be a transitional season. Eddie is still learning to embed his coaching on the hoof, leading to a new look forward line sometimes throwing in frustrating and disjointed displays. We'll vent, but ultimately accept success isn't always a linear path, so the end justify the means.

2) Get stuck into coaches, players and executives whenever a result doesn't go our way. The finger must be pointed and blame apportioned accordingly. You can call individuals worse than shit, but hide behind the veil of "I'm allowed to criticise" despite the rationality of said criticism being up for debate (if we're being kind).

I'm more of a 2) man myself and I'm delighted to see others indulging.

Unsure what the transition is meant to be? We look to be doing the same stuff, but everyone expects it now and the players aren't as good. I think it'll ultimately be fine but yes, not sure what we're transitioning to.

What's the answer then Einstein. Loads of moaning but no suggestions of solutions.

Boring as fuck this now btw.

I've probably used the word transitional myself, but on reflection, maybe it is overstated a wee bit - or rather it's maybe not actually about transition at all. Maybe the more 'cultural'-scale mitigation is in us actually trying to hold onto our identity, after losing probably our most important player and having to face four competitions with a heavily depleted squad.

This is it for me too. Seems to be a bit of a buzz word being used as some sort of excuse for how one dimensional we’ve looked at times. I don’t see any transition into us playing a different formation, or a different way.

That’s not to say there aren’t mitigating factors btw. There absolutely are.

It's sort of astounding we just take the same approach, lineup and subs for every single game.

It feels very much like the Pep/Arteta approach. They play the same system & tactics almost all the time, but the difference they have is that they have lots of quality depth to do that.

We need to be more creative with our solutions.

Quite infuriating to watch us play a team that do concede elements of control in the middle to play Rogers further forward but we just won't ever do it anymore. The other thing is that we did used to when needed  when we were a more 'inferior' squad than we are now.

His sabbatical where by all accounts he visited a number of coaches to educate and improve himself speaks loudly for this. Really hope he can continue to evolve as I'd prefer he was here for a very long time.

We’ve got fuck all to lose by trying Woltemade and Wissa together.

It can’t be much worse.

*insert Mick McCarthy meme*

Neither striker is actually performing at the moment (I like Wolte, I don’t rate Wissa). We’re clutching at straws if we think putting two underperforming players in together is going to fix anything. We need to get the rest of the team working with the strikers but they are so different and they are rotated within every game. All in all it just looks like amateurish squad building.

We might as well give Osula a run of games, he may or may not have something.

i wonder if having Burn back means we occasionaly go 3 at the back and get an extra forward on when we're chasing a game.

Think this could be a particularly interesting option when Tino is back fully fit. Him and Hall from wing back positions could be immense.
