Sunderland haven't played the most games in the top 5 European leagues.

Which clubs who have played almost the same amount of games as us including European games, are performing better?

With the money we've spent we should be able to compete better, even with the amount of games we've had, thats my point.

Whilst they've had a minor wobble, Villa for a start have played nearly as many games as us and are comparable. Then you've got sides like Everton, Brentford, Brighton, hell even fucking Sunderland, that whilst they haven't played as many matches, have, or at least should have in theory, much weaker squads than ours, that are better than us in the league.

We should be able to manage two games a week with the money we've spent.

It's canny disheartening seeing the way in which people turn like, we've been shit most of the season. Hopefully we're back on track next year with one game a week and everyone's back to pretending they never went on like this again.

Not as disheartening as that was today.

We have struggled all season without an out and out striker and don't see that as Eddie's fault.  More to do with those above and of course Mitchell

Did Mitchell secretly sign Wissa and Woltemade?

Is anyone really surprised with the performance or the result?

Cheers for the cup. Deserves to see out the season. But unless he’s gets us in Europe then he should be sacked. Unacceptable what this season has been like so far.

We’ve bought replacements for nearly every player who Howe is supposedly too loyal to. Burn with Botman, Longstaff with Tonali, Murphy with Elanga.  Problem is they haven’t been improvements and/or they’ve been injured.

He's earned himself next season. I get the anger but so many teams get stuck in a loop of shit managers that they have to keep firing.

I think we forget that he's still a young manager. I have no doubt he will use this and become better. If anybody has earned the right to prove that, it's him.

If, as I suspect, theyre just not that arsed anymore, I imagine he'll stay, we'll sell a few players, have pittance to spend and just end up around mid table again. We've been a mid table team all season so its where we deserve to finish, my major worry now is that is what we're destined to be.

Absolutely with you for the first part. We will however have a stack to spend. We do already but even before potentially missing out on europe we are going to lose 2 or 3 of Gordon, Tino, Tonali and Bruno. We know Hall, Miley and Thiaw also have been linked away to big clubs.

Tons of players out of contract. Wouldn't be surprised to see at least 1 if not 2 of Wolt/Wissa/Osula sold. Willock out likely too and Pope probably sold.

We could feasibly have 500m in the bank.

Its going to be a massive squad turn over whether Howe stays or not.

I’m on the fence on whether I trust him to do the rebuild now. Three months ago I wasn’t, but Brentford, Everton, now the Mackems has been a sequence from hell for him.

You said "a lot of clubs in a worse position than us". You've named one club. Not sure Villa are in a worse position than us anyway?

There's no doubting we've underperformed

If I see one more stupid cunt talk about credit in the bank man. It's fucking irrelevant.

You base decision off what he's able to achieve going forward.

Sure but you judge that on more than just the last few months don’t you?

They’ve just been promoted from the second division via the playoffs - they wouldn’t be in a position to have to deal with first rate opposition like Carrier Bag.

He’s not going to bin his nephew, and that’s a problem, even within the building. So if you want to keep him on that’s the chances you’re going to take.

Mitchell left because he deemed a shortlist containing players such as Wissa ‘not fit for purpose’.

Eddie was in charge of our summer recruitment and it seems pretty likely that Mitchell left because there was a power battle between him and Eddie over recruitment, which Eddie won.

I’ve no doubt if Howe stays next season we will end up in the European places and some decent cup runs. However, the following season we’ll have a shite league campaign, again, ending up out of Europe and starting yet another rebuild.

Might be a good enough existence for some but is nowhere near the stated ambitions of the club or what we could/should be capable of.

He’s not shite, he’s not a bad person, he’s achieved a hell of a lot more than I ever expected to see as a Newcastle supporter. However, he has a ceiling and we’ll either need to bump our head on it every other season or decide we need to move house.

What sort of football does Alonso play? As I think he’d be a good candidate to change things. With the limited times I saw his Bayer Leverkusen play, it felt controlled with some pace and power on the break too.

I want us to be a side that keeps possession of the ball and dominates against these shit teams like today

I agree with this, Big Nick is a canny player but he doesn't match Howes style ( it will be interesting to see how Germany use him) and Wissa is the worst number 9 I've seen in my lifetime.

I have a theory/observation, and it may be totally off.

I think Eddie works hard, cares deeply for the club and players, and gives everything, but he can't break out of a certain mindset.

He holds so rigidly to the 433, high press style. He's so risk averse in the transfer market, and seems to want so much control. He's so reluctant to rotate, to make subs, to play youth.

At a stretch you could also say he tends to move players into more defensive positions, rather than attacking ones - off the top of my head, Woltemade ST to CAM, Ramsey CAM/LW to CM at best, Hall CDM to LB, Joelinton ST to CM, Miley CM to RB. Not saying some of those haven't worked, but they're all defensive moves. I struggle to think of many who've moved to more attacking positions.

I suspect Eddie can't or won't adjust his mindset on a lot of things, and when plan A doesn't work, he doesn't really know what to do, and in matches, we see the players kind of pick up on that. Hence the sitting back, inability to control games, complete absence of a midfield etc. I just don't think Eddie has an answer, and he gets found out by tactically braver/more astute managers time and time again.

If he was anyone else - Pardew, Allerdyce, Kinnear - he'd be out. Today and Barca were embarrassing. Time to move on.

Do PIF give a shit about the derbies anyway? I'm not convinced they're that arsed.

If theyre not they should fuck off and sell the club to someone who cares about the opinion of the supporters.
