A season of frustration. Ridiculous we havent gone all out to walk this league and brought better players in.

Is next season still 2 or 3 promoted? Or back to 1? We have likely blown this one.

1 automatic and 1 play off spot.

from next season WSL2 champions promoted, with the 14th place in the WSL1 relegated, 13th place will playoff against 2nd in WSL2 - Given the gulf in class you'd assume the WSL1 side would win in most cases

The players are nowhere near good enough.

Only one with any kind of potential is Murphy, most others are old has beens who were just squad members of better squads.

They need to totally clear out in the summer and bring younger WSL players they can get a hold of and who have potential. They have had 2-3 summers now of building squads that have just had to be replaced as they are nowhere near the standard.

With WSL currently not going towards your PSR allowance or whatever it’s now called, they should be going all out.

More evidence that PIF aren't the answer. With a small amount of targeted investment this league would have been a cake walk.

They massively miss Amanda as she championed the team. No idea what PIF and RB think or prioritize right now. Missed a great opportunity though it seems.

Murphy will 100% leave in the summer too as she wanted away in Jan. That puts our squad back to 0 players who would be capable of playing in the WSL.

Seen nothing in the performances since we changed manager that suggests there is a long term plan, they're clearly just happy plodding along!

They had a perfect opportunity this season to go up, and they just haven’t been arsed.

So many of them are here for 1 last payday. There has been no effort under 2 managers now.

I do wonder if they realize NOT getting promoted keeps them employed?

That thought had crossed my mind.

I do think Jordan Nobbs is head and shoulders above any other player on the pitch most games, but she's not suited to playing at this level, where others dont anticipate her passes, so it makes her look average.

Palace & Birmingham both won so that's 3 points from third (play-off) and 6 points from the second automatic promotion spot. With three games left it's a reasonable assumption that they've fucked it.

At least the potential play-off would be a home game.

I wonder if, in the summer, we will put 2 and 2 together and realise the reason we haven't gone up is due to too many draws (again) as we have no one that can score a goal (or pass to make one). Probably not.

Why are they playing at Gateshead now?

KP didn’t suit criteria I think? Maybe the plastic pitch?

Either way it’s absolutely shite, the GIS.

Blown it then, barring an epic collapse at palace and an unanticipated last two games from us. They're nowhere near good enough to compete in the WSL though, and there doesn't appear to be a lot of ambition, so probably for the best all things considered.

Have to wonder whether it was really worth losing the good will that they did booting out the local lasses and the ones who had come through the divisions.  The buzz around the women's team is much reduced from two years ago (fully accept that by the end they were big and well paid fish in a small and generally amateur pond in the National League mind).

Yeah you’ve got to spend properly just to get into the WSL now. Liverpool were in danger of relegation at one point, and West Ham are a pretty good side with a serious manager who are still in danger. Don’t know how good the others in WSL2 are. I feel like the WSL2 highlights I’ve seen have pretty much just been the goals so I can’t comment too much on the standard now. I had presumed that it would have improved from when we were last there pre-COVID, but the bits I've seen haven’t been great.

That said, I took my eldest and a friend to Brentford back in Feb. My wife works with somebody who’s a regular and/or involved in the club in some way. Had no idea what to expect - I wondered if they were at the bottom of WSL 2 but turns out they are in the fifth tier . They were playing against Saltdean United and I thought “fuck, this is going to be awful”. No fans, shitty football.

Couldn’t have been more wrong. They played at Brentford’s stadium and attendance was about 4500. Turns out Saltdean are bloody good. Just checked the table and Brentford and Saltdean are the top two. It was really encouraging to watch - Saltdean played good football from front to back, were physical and fast, and had three or four players who seemed very experienced and clever. Proper football. Good atmosphere and it cost me £5 entrance total for me and two teenagers.

It’s a good sign that there’s some good depth, but we’ve done almost everything right this year on and off the pitch and we’re still fifth and well behind Man U in 4th let alone the really top clubs. There’s a plausible argument that our best player last season and this has been a player on loan from the top four. London City basically had a billionaire come in and throw money at them, in the process forming a Chelsea-like stable of clubs from multiple countries. Plus ça change. You’re going to have to just accept big losses and throw tons of cash at your women’s team both on and off the pitch. The good thing from your side is that your owners can do that.

Can’t help but think moving to the GIS will kill excitement. It’s a truly horrendous experience watching a game of football there, nothing nearby except Maccies, Asda and a petrol station. Just soulless as fuck.

Not sure what the answer is but they need to find something different. Maybe somewhere like Blue Star or Benfield, although probably too small.

Completely agree. If you’re going to completely overhaul the team and management from a popular group, then you have to win promotion or at least very seriously challenge for it.

Three people need seriously looking at in the inquest to this season:

1. PIF - they’ve given us a healthy budget but not a ‘blow the league away’ budget. It would have cost probably max. £1m-£2m more to guarantee WSL next season.
2. Grace Williams - aware she only arrived last August but the January business was shockingly poor given our position. Most of the January signings have been bench warming for in recent weeks.

3. Tanya Oxtoby - again only here since late November but the style of play has been shocking in recent weeks and I’ve seen very little so far to suggest she is an upgrade on Becky Langley.

In terms of next season I’d keep Tamminen, Nobbs and Sevenius - and then would be open to offloading pretty much everyone else.
