Let them have their moment in the sun, we all know how it usually pans out.

Anyhoo, 60 year old men highlighting their first ever game in Yewrup, isn't quite the flex they think it is.

It's a massive stain on Howe's NUFC career though. I hope he's got what it takes to get the better of their manager next time round, because he certainly fucked it royally this season.

I see we are now at the ‘They will probably be close to going down next season’ stage following a multitude of shifting the goalposts pretty much every week since promotion [emoji38]

Think most would say and have said the same about any team getting into Europe that potentially isn't ready for it. Burnley, Leicester, West Ham, Palace, Forest, Newcastle etc. Feel free to use it as an opportunity to think you're unique though.

People need take to accept it, Sunderland were far better than us this year, beat us twice and comfortably finished above us after being outside the league for 10 years. There's no way of dressing it up.

What....losing home and away to your local rivals has nothing to do with Eddie Howe? He should just have let Tindall pick the team and take training for a week then and put his feet up and watched Sky Sports instead of attending the game then.

This is the Sunderland thread and people are talking about them qualifying for Europe for the first time since the internet was a thing. Stop making it about Eddie Howe.

Sadly, very much this.

It’s going to be a very long summer for us living in areas where there are plenty of red and whiters if yesterday is anything to go by!

Nailed on they’ll draw AC Milan away as well!

Hurts they beat us twice, shite they have got Europe. No point crying about it though. We need to respond next season. I think Europe will hurt them in the league.

Yeah fair play, they had a great season and they bettered us over every conceivable metric domestically, they are where they are through sheer bloody-mindedness, intensity and concentration. Having said that, all of those things will take a hammering playing every 3 days next season, so they will have to evolve to cope, something we have failed to do so far.

Mate there were people claiming it would be the defining moment of the season as far him keeping the job was concerned. I don't agree with it, but to underplay it isn't doing anyone any favours.

Based on historical performances by clubs in a similar position, isn't it more likely than not that you'll struggle in the league with the extra strain of Europe to contend with?

This isn't some outlandish observation that has never been made before, it's a pattern that repeats year on year.

Losing both derby matches in one season to a team that probably cost less than our bench.

Europa League isn’t that taxing until the latter stages to be fair. Not a chance they go down, probably some regression to the mean of around 15th but I still think that is a good season for them.

Yeah but to say it's a massive stain on his legacy is a bit dramatic.

Do you think in 10 years time when we look back at his time here we'll think, "he was our most succesful manager, brought us two champions league campaigns and ended our trophy drought but his legacy will forever be stained by losing twice to sunderland."

Seems a bit small time if anyone actually does/will think that.

Infact, I'd go further and say if someone offered me the FA or League Cup next season but we lose both derbies again I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Fair enough, perhaps some hyperbole if you want to deconstruct it rationally. I will rephrase it as an unfortunate but slight stain on his legacy.

If you want to talk about moving goalposts, have a look over at RTG and the opinions on European football qualification from this time last year, and compare them with the attitudes posted this week.

Because whenever we qualified for Europe, it was overwhelmingly ridiculed (5th place doesn't deserve Europe, the teams that qualify are all shit, nobody cares, the competition is a joke, we are being rewarded for failure, it's all a scam etc.)

Very different opinions on there now though!

So many posters over there are absolute embittered morons, they don't know whether they want a shit or a haircut.
