Latest: The Times claim that a contract extension and substantial increase on his wages was offered to Alexander Isak by Newcastle but rejected.

Earlier: Following confirmation of Alexander's Isak absence from the touring squad, the Mail are reporting that the player "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club" during the current transfer window.

They stress that no formal transfer request has been made by the 25 year-old, no bids have been received and the player is not for sale according to his current club. 

None of those things matter though; the message is clear. A concerted campaign from the North West involving briefings to sympathetic media outlets has succeeded in unsettling the player and encouraged his representatives. 

This latest development will doubtless prompt a backlash against Isak from disgruntled Newcastle fans, which will then be advanced as a reason for his inevitable exit.

How much blame can be attached to United is debatable, but a turnover of director level personalities hardly helps paint a picture of a club with a coherent strategy. 

Rightly or wrongly, there's a feeling the project has stalled and the grand off-field plans of PIF remain unannounced. 

Ultimately though it comes down to money. The Premier League have ensured that the Magpies cannot match the salary offered elsewhere - and cannot reject the offer made to them in exchange for their prize asset.

I'm sure we tried similar with Guehi but we barely budged Palace - in fact Parish controlled the narrative there. I get part of this might be down to Isak turning out to be a massive bell end.

Parish knew Guehi wasn't a cunt and wouldn't kick up a fuss and was willing to take the financial hit. As I said at the time, keeping Guehi and staying in the league is a much better deal for palace than selling him and getting relegated. 

 

Hand on heart we are in a really difficulty place because we simply can't match our stated ambition, now psr has been dismantled none of those big boys have to worry they can spend what they like as so many loopholes exist they don't have to worry. As we aren't willing to do the same we are left holding our dicks.

Im not suggesting a fee of 200m, but it frees up PSR to spend that kinda cash. This isnt rocket science

The day was always going to come when one of our purples was going to leave. It's the reality of where we are in the football food chain, even Liverpool are sometimes powerless to stop their talents getting poached by bigger fish. 

The question is what do we do with the funds once we make a big sale. It could potentially propel us forward if we use it to strengthen several areas or if we squander the opportunity we could begin to slide back.

The way this window has gone, I'm not hopeful.

FWIW when I've had discussions about this purely as a fan I've said i would sell since May and people have looked at me like I'm mental, and maybe I am but hear me out.

 

He is as peak price right now due to contract position and last season. Its extremely hard to see how it goes up given his incredible season, player rating, scoring the winner in our first trophy win in so long, the fact he remained fit for so long. The only possible way it increases if he goes to the world cup, scores 6 and gets sweden towards the semi's. Even in that scenario it puts him further into a threshold people cant pay due to PSR. Conversely if he has an average season or just a good to very good season, at best his value stays the same but its unlikely with a further year off his contract. Add to that he may pick up injuries again etc we could end up selling below peak and impact ourselves going forward. I think we all accept he will go next summer so to me whether its now of then, you sell at the highest point.

 

Its slightly different but Spurs sold at peak with Bale and wrongly reinvested the money and wasted that opportunity. I dont see Isak as an irreplaceable player like Bale was, but it will cost a lot of money to be able to replace him. To use a moneyball phrase we may have to recreate him in the aggregate but in that sense we add squad depth. Had we done the deal and taken Ekitike and pocked a further 50m, we could have used it towards a player like Eze so i really dont see this as a terrible situation, we hold all the cards, even if it is late on

I have - you're assuming we cant spend it well. I dont buy that arguement - there is opportunity here for our squad to be stronger come 15th August with Isak sold as disappointing as that would be.

 

I also firmly believe that Eddie howe backs himself and board to spend 200m well & would at this stage prefer that to keeping isak

I’m now firmly in the camp of “sell him abroad for anything over £120m”. Don’t entertain any offers from the prem for less than £150m.

 

It’s massively disappointing news, but trying to think positively, I’m not going to beat up the club about it until I see where we end up at the end of the transfer window. If we sell, reinvest, and it allows us to get 3-4 top quality players in (and spend that extra 5-10m on players we’ve been reluctant to do), then it will make the blow much easier to take.

 

I’m still not remotely convinced this is coming from Alex… truly believe it’s agent agent agent driven. But it is what it is. We clearly can’t offer the wages and/or the chance of titles that they want right now.
