Brentford have the third lowest wage bill in the division.  Lower than Leicester and only above the other 2 promoted teams. Their squad cost in fees is 15th. They should be fighting relegation every season. But through transfers and great management they don’t.  

 

A lot of those are good players imo. The terrible GK aside most of them are 24 or under with room to improve.  But look at the macro cost of the squad in fees and wages it’s unarguable that Brentford spend their money wisely.

Spend money wisely on wages, and in their early years good spending on players, but I’d say wages aside, their spending hasn’t been good. Those players may have room to grow because of age, but by large they’re not offering much to them and it’s the players from when in championship still key to them (Pinnock / Henry / Norgaard / Janelt / Mbeumo).

 

They also got rid of their academy for 7 seasons, which will mean playing catch up in future seasons and need to keep spending on squad filler as they lose players.

The rumour was that Howe really rated him, and that was back when he was being quoted at £40m plus. It's not out of the question that at a lower price Howe might think he could do a Chris Wood type job as a target man alternative to Wilson for a relatively low fee.

I don't know how many of you have friends that are Arsenal fans, but my God they are absolutely gagging for this fella 

 

I have been having the time of my life winding them up about it, especially after he scored against them. 

 

They had started convincing themselves he and Newcastle were going to have a bad season and so they'd get him for cheaper.

 

Been an absolute thrill having him come back into form along with us looking so much better of late, while Arsenal have been struggling.

 

They are all legit depressed now

You can’t say ‘wages aside’. Wages are more important to success than transfer fees. Wages is what attracts players with proven track records of performing at the highest level. Real Madrid’s spend on transfers is not astronomical and behind a number of teams in Europe. But they are #1 in wages.
 

Brentford are spending by PL standards, lowly sums and can only offer bottom level PL wages so the players they sign cannot be of massive repute or have proven track records.  That should make them relegation candidates year in, year out.  As are the other teams paying such low wages.

Hall/Tino are ones of Brentford style in recent years but better and bigger. If it's that, then sure. If not, then I'm confused to what we want to copy from Brentford when their current success is still about maximising the squad from 2018/19. Mbeumo is probably their last decent sellable asset too, after that, it's all their recent buys where they need them to step up to make money since they have no-one youth wise to integrate and sell, and likely a contributor to the lowly wages as more is needed to be spent on signing players for continuous depth.

By having a squad that consistently finishes multiple places above its wage grade (and its squad cost). Buying players that can improve over time and be worth more than we paid in fee and paying in salary. Being able to sell prized assets and not miss a beat.  If we can finish 2-4 places above our wage bill 4 out of the next 5 years we’ll have done brilliantly.

They did finish 16th last season. They are scoring a lot currently, but only 1 team has conceded more. They may very well end up at around 15th again.
