Wonder if part of this is him getting sick of the right wing whoppers sideshow.

Would imagine so, not that it’ll stop that - once the hate taps are on they’re never switched off. Shame as he’s a top presenter and pundit. At least he’ll be doing the next WC.

Doubt he needs the coin either given how well his podcasts and so on.

The right wing knuckledraggers are lying to themselves. I'm sometimes in complete agreement with him, sometimes think he talks completely uninformed bollocks, but as a football pundit he's fucking superb. In some ways his only downfall as a presenter is that he'd be even better as a pundit.

Match of the Day: Who could replace Gary Lineker as host?

BBC have their list of who is next [emoji38]

My favourite part of the BBC article about him leaving (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdd456rzg75o

"BBC News understands....His departure is expected to be announced officially by the BBC on Tuesday."

I mean you've literally wrote that in an article about him leaving, I think that counts as announcing it

Of that list I'd pick Gabby Logan. Take aside the fact she's a toon fan, she's just generally an excellent presenter whatever sport she's covering.

I like Mark chapman too, though his more informal style might be better for MOTD2

Mark Chapman is the only one on that list who should get the job.

Imagine if Micah Richards got the job [emoji38]  It would be an hour of him giggling [emoji38]

Shearer getting the job would be class, just for the mackem outrage !

Does there have to be a main presenter ? Chapman now and again, Logan likewise, Woods same, Humphreys as well. Shearer and Richards aren't presenters

Chiles where he belongs ? Local radio in the West Midlands?

Not sure I've watched a full episode of MOTD in years. I binge all the other highlights straight after on YouTube and then will only watch MOTD if we've won, skipping straight to our game.

How many "that's me" will that post get ?

That's me (1).

Those little three minute clips on YouTube are perfect for most games, I don't need longer highlights or analysis. If it's a big game chances are I watched it live anyway.

Sad in a way but like with many things the consumption model has changed so dramatically. For me MOTD was at its best pre-smartphone when it was reasonably possible you'd actually avoid all results and watch it without knowing the scores. Almost unthinkable/impossible now. I still remember sticking the TV on during highlights of our Carling Cup penalty shoot out win against Watford in 2006, having completely forgotten we had played, and effectively watched it 'as live'. I kind of wish I could be that unplugged these days.

Trouble with MOTD is that the analysis is superficial to the point of irrelevance. I'd rather see more highlights than have half the show being people talking vaguely about a game they haven't even properly watched.

On the flip side you can get the OTT 442-style anaylsis 'OMG Longstaff was moving a little bit before a throw in was taken, what a genius bit of play' trying to make everything seem far deeper than it actually is.

But somewhere between the two there is a sweet spot. MOTD doesn't have time for both thorough highlights and decent analysis, so might as well just spend more time on highlights IMO.

The quality of punditry is so fucking bad these days too that it's just not worth listening to anyway. Give me someone who's been there, done it, and won more than a 'club bants merchant' award and maybe I'd change my mind. But the likes of Richards, Jenas, Murphy and Merson? Not watching.

I remember when G.Nev first joined Monday night football. His insight was absolute top class. Like nothing we had seen before.

Love it when they get current managers on too, when Rafa was on etc it makes you realise exactly why they're at the elite level.

You do wonder what the fuck all of the broadcasters are thinking at times. MOTD2 the other night was Troy Deeney and Theo Walcott. The former doesn't deserve to be anywhere near a position like that and the latter is so mild-mannered and uninteresting, you wonder what the point is. There are definitely plenty of decent pundits out there (even if you don't agree with them), but there's some proper bilge. Incredible how Murphy has had that amazing gig for so long.

I also dislike the trend of broadcasters appearing on multiple channels now, rather being a BBC guy, or whatever. Matterface is doing TNT this season, for eg. :anguish:
