I find them extremely likeable and I'm so pleased for them (and the league, tbh) that they haven't crumbled post-Potter; it would have been so depressing all round given how shit it's gone for him at Chelsea. I think so low of Potter now, like. So grim he went to that disgusting club instead of continuing to carry Brighton on that brilliant trajectory. If they finish 4th and we finish 5th then it's been a class season for the league. My aversion to the Champions League definitely aids this position. Just anything that disrupts the so-called 'big six' is, imo, a great thing, and if we were to miss out on 4th, I'd feel better - as a football fan - if it were Brighton as opposed to Liverpool or, God forbid, Chelsea. I agree with Kanji tbh, it would be even more deflating if the Big Six's domination was broken by a club like Brighton. It would only emphasise that we had this in our grasp and blew it. Champions League was always an unlikely bonus this season. It's a moot point anyway cos Brighton aren't gonna finish fourth. Ultimately my perspectives have changed over the years. But that was because I assumed we couldn't finish above the big six ( and in reality probably still won't) but considering Brighton have lost a couple of key players, and their manager, I would be disappointed if they still manage to overhaul us. Few people discussed being content with finishing below Brighton. Their summer window didn't have any renowned names either. They lost more hyped names than they signed. They've just been brilliant in the boardroom and it's shown in the market and coach decisions. Their whole development is well-ahead of course. And we haven't factored that. Because Spurs, Liverpool and the other big hitters have massively superior squads, built over a long period with substantial investment which we couldn't touch. Brighton have just been very well managed, and in fact probably had less resources than us, but have over-performed massively. Paullow Posted March 16, 2023 Share Posted March 16, 2023 (edited) Obviously, West Ham and Leicester have massively failed (domestically) this season, and are nailed on to both finish in the bottom half, if not relegated, and our odds would have been exaggerated due to bookies fear, and also expected money to be placed due to the sheer magnitude of the takeover, but while we obviously can't influence how well other teams do, I agree with those who say it would be a bit disappointing if we were to finish below Brighton (or Brentford) given the position they were in, and those teams now being within 2 or 3 points, and significantly closing the gap in recent weeks, isn't ideal. Brighton are strange. They have finished bottom 6 every season since they came up with us in 2017, bar last season when they finished 9th, just a couple of points above us in 11th, but despite this, they do seem to have been geared up to do well, and it feels like they have been doing well for a while, despite their general low league finishes (as low as 16th in 2021). They also lost two of their supposed better players in the summer, and brought in lesser known players (as usual), but as others say they are very well run behind the scenes, and always seem to have a contingency plan in place for whenever it's needed, and in most cases, that plan often works out an upgrade. I'd have been very happy with 7th to 9th 'and a cup run' at the start of the season, and I'd still be OK with 7th now (as long the FA Cup was won by a side in the top 6, so we still got some sort of European football), but given we were like 8 or 9 points clear of Brighton and Brentford not too long ago, it would be a bit disappointing if we were to finish below another 'non top 6 team', even if we were to finish above the likes of Chelsea. Finishing 7th behind the 'big 6' and being the obvious 'best of the rest' at this stage of our journey, and getting the plaudits for that, would have been more satisfying to me than finishing 7th behind a supposed lesser side, who would have had an even better season than us, if that makes sense.
