My memory isn't great, but I don't think it was a sitter. Pope made a cracking save from a good strike.

We were sitting deep protecting a point, which we wouldn't have done if we'd needed to win.

I think it started by us passing it around the defence, which was positioned about 30-40m from our goal (just to use time). Then they did some sneaky pressing, and I think both Burn and Schär gave the ball away to give them chances. Individual errors basically. Sloppy last 10, but we will smash Everton if we create as many big chances as we did that day.

Goes to 7th.

So there isn’t a default spot in conference league for a league place? Say if we finished tenth having won the cup, we would be in conference league and no other English team would be?

No. 7th doesn’t officially have a place in Europe, it’s dependent on the cup winners already qualifying for Europe.

At the moment we are in a position where if we don’t finish 7th, then it means we finish in a European position above the Conference League via our Premier League finish. If we finish 7th, then we qualify for the Conference League via our League Cup win, not because we finished 7th.

No. In a normal season, 1-4 get CL, 5 get EL, 6 get nothing, 1 of the 2 EL spots goes to the FA Cup winners, the Conf League spot goes to the LC winners. If, like most seasons, those comps are won by teams who have already qualified then European spots would go down to 6th and 7th, just 6th last year as Man Utd won the FA Cup, as we found out.

This year, there was a bonus CL spot, so 1-5 get CL, 6 gets Europa, 7 would have got nothing (depending on the cups). Palace get the 2nd EL spot via winning the FA Cup and our conf spot for winning the LC would go to 7th place, which still could be us anyway, but more likely to be Forest. Had say Wolves won the LC, then Forest wouldn't have gotten anything for finishing 7th.

So this means Fulham and Bournemouth doesn't have anything to play for anymore? Absolutely genious move by Pep.

Edit: Unless Chelsea win Conference..?

Just go out and put Arsenal down tomorrow. It’s still in our hands. It’s over if we win tomorrow.

I'm definitely wanting Man City to win. That would secure Europa League, even if it's very likely we will get at least that, it's still not guaranteed. Plus it would give Bmouth and Fulham something to play for when they do play Man City in the final 2 matches, and also, while it shouldn't matter, and wouldn't take away the great moment, it would still feel a bit weird, us ending our long trophy drought, the massive celebrations, masses on the streets, only for Crystal Palace to win a bigger trophy barely 2 months later, so yeah, come on Man City.

Bournemouth and Fulham can still qualify by finishing 8th if Chelsea win the conference

No, that place fucks off back somewhere in Europe.

This kind of stuff is exactly why the Conference League would be such fun. I still don't want anything but Champions League though.

What’s fun about being in a tournament it would be embarrassing if we didn’t win? No thanks. No ECL at all costs.

Palace in the Europa League will be a good test of the theory that Premier League teams are going to dominate that competition by default. A lower/mid-table team with a mixed squad and literally zero European history or pedigree. If they end up in the final then it really is curtains for the rest of Europe at that level.

Forest are the key here? Fail to win at West Ham today, beat Chelsea last day, we're in?

think a point for Forest today is ideal result for us. Don't want them winning obviously as it closes the gap, but a point gives them something to play and win for vs. Chelsea yep.

Yeah they could bail us out but I’d just like to see us get it done far more straightforwardly rather than desperately checking other results 😂

Experience will be a factor. It looks like next years Europa will have stronger teams too.

The bigger factor is the lack of relegation threats a team like Palace now has. And squad size. And which ends up being a bigger factor.

Some day, one day, I will understand all the permutations.

It's like working out how the Egyptians built the pyramids.

I used to be very clear on all the routes in but it feels like there's been about a hundred different permutations this year. Being absolutely certain of a second place finish for weeks has left me fairly non-plussed though.

Aye, 10 years ago you'd worry about them staying up maybe. They can give the Europa League a proper go safe in the knowledge they'll not go down. Think Quarter Finals of the Europa League should be par these days for any Premier League team.
