A one off carabao cup win isn’t going to make much difference to a global brand, see the likes of Swansea and Birmingham for that.

Champions League qualification brings in big money, allowing the club to spend more on transfer and attracting better players. It is still on the club to build on that but it is the springboard to better things and popularity globally.

Spurs are a great example of that.

Spurs global brand isn't anywhere near as strong as teams who win shit though. Getting a cup win and Europe will build our profile more than CL for a season imo.

I mean none of this matters anyway cause we're winning the cup and getting CL...

Reminds me of a couple of seasons ago when the mentality with some boiled down to "not sure if we should qualify for the Champions League, it'll harm our ability to get into the Champions League!"

I don't think people truly appreciate what winning a cup would do for this football club right now. We're already on an upward trajectory, it would get a huge monkey off our back, increase the liklihood of it happening again, and galvanise everyone. We're not going to do a Swansea or Birmingham, that's idiotic.

It’s not a choice mate. Stifler argued that PL finishing position was immaterial if we won the LC. Would you agree?

Immaterial to who? Those in charge of the club would say CL but as a fan if you offered me a loss on Sunday and 5th or win the cup and 10th I'd pick the latter without hesitation.

Edit - I realise I haven't really answered the question

Tbf I think he probably meant it in the context of it being a choice (even if it’s not).

And he’s partly right in that outside of finishing top 5, it would be immaterial to a degree.

Ultimately football and being a fan is down to winning things, personally couldn't care less what was better for the brand or whatever and a win on Sunday is worth 10 champions league runs to me.

However, "business wise" a higher league finish and CL football is where the money is at, it will raise our profile, allow us to keep our better players and increase our chances of signing even better ones. All while increasing our bank balance.

Fortunately these things aren't mutually exclusive, but the NUFC fan in me just wants to see us finally win something, selfishly and I'm unapologetic about it.

If the choice was win a cup but not get Champions League, or fail to win the club but get Champions League, i'm choosing the cup every single day of the week. I've seen us in the Champions League, i've never seen us win a cup.

Personally I think that if there is any Newcastle fan picking Champions League qualification in that scenario, they need to be checked into Arkham.

The other clubs you are referring to do everything, they have a history of winning trophies and regular qualification for the Champions League.

West Ham is another good example, what do you think winning the Europa Conference did for their global brand?

From my perspective as a fan yeah. I understand your argument and I'm not saying it doesn't make sense, I just think it's sad that we're at this point where fans would prefer finishing 5th over winning a cup.

In all fairness I said in the context of getting Europe, a win on Sunday makes the rest of the season irrelevant if we are talking about getting back into Europe, as we would have already achieved it.

If we are talking between a choice between Champions League or even Europa League football next season, or a cup win, I’ll take the cup win. I’d honestly take a cup win and lose every single game afterwards until the end of the season. You probably have to be in your 80’s now to remember us last winning something domestically, and you either collecting or close to collecting your pension if you remember us winning the Fairs Cup.

We need that monkey off our back.

At the end of the day, if you asked Spurs fans if they would rather win a cup, or be in the Champions League, they’d take a cup win, and they won something in 2008.

Genuinely baffled at how many miss the point of what my gripe was with Stifler’s post

Not disputing anyones comments on here but its simple.

Win a fucking cup.  Win it and you get Europe.  Win it and you get momentum.  Win it and you get CL as that momentum/high carries.  Win it and you win something again next season.

Honestly, it's the catalyst to take the club to another level, regardless of the trophy.

It kick started Man City/Chelsea iirc etc.  Its not hard to see when a club has been starved of success what it can bring mentality wise for future competitions and general attitude.  Plucky loses become genuine competitors in everything.  Exposure?  You've just won a domestic cup competition after a very long time.  The scenes alone in NCL would create enough exposure to help boost our 'brand' let alone the benefits mentioned above.

It’s not about “getting in Europe” though, is it? Massive difference between CL and the other European competitions in terms of revenue and exposure. If we want to keep the likes of Isak and add quality over the next few years, CL qualification is going to be vital.

Fair.

I just don't value the CL over a cup win. I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

My Dad is like 67 and only seen us win the fairs cup, I'm 35 and have seen us lift nothing of note. So a cup win would be a fantastic moment for us both to share and would have huge benefits for the club and it's confidence etc. To kick on.

It's basically heart vs head this debate tbh. No one is wrong.

So you'd prefer to win the cup than finish 5th? Obviously it's a daft hypothetical where the answer is 'both' not one or the other, but I'm interested to know your preference because I've been posting on the premise that you'd prefer CL or have them both on the same level.

Why do so many posters assume I would rather we qualify for CL than win the league cup, when what I am actually saying is we shouldn’t be satisfied if we win a cup, and chase CL qualification for all we’ve got as that will ultimately benefit the club more going forward? I want both and I don’t think the rhe rest of the season is immaterial should we win on Sunday. We have CL qualification in our grasp; it’s important that we capitalise on this opportunity.

Yes, if given the choice I’d prefer to win the cup. If we do, I don’t want us to stop pushing is all.

Bookies have Chelsea down as favourites ahead of us but I would be pretty disappointed if we finished below them. They were in horrendous form, their back to back wins were the two easiest games in the league on paper (one of which they only won by a goal) and they have some difficult fixtures with a lack of striker in the short term and two terrible goalkeepers. They are the main team above us that we need to target finishing above.
