You'll never see the best of players like Tonali throwing them on in the second half when you're chasing the game. He has to start and we have to find a way to make the team tick with him in it. 

 

Longstaff is absolute bobbins in games like today. You know exactly what you're going to get.

Eddie needs to find a way to get the best out of him, otherwise he’s going to get more frustrated and we’ll lose a cracking player next summer. 

 

Can’t be doing his confidence any good knowing he’s benched by Sean Longstaff.

I’d kill to know if Howe really wanted the lad in the first place.  The only time he’s looked at the level was playing deeper - which is where we have Bruno.  Still scratching my head re this signing, not even allowing for his ‘indiscretions’.

Think people should concern themselves more with his performances when he gets game time than the game time itself tbh. He's not doing really anything to make him starting over Longstaff an obvious decision, and I've been lead to believe Longstaff is the worst player of all time.

If only to have Bruno further up as he is our most likely player to thread passes through to Isak, he absolutely has to start!

 

This Longstaff thing is utterly ridiculous and was ultimately our undoing tonight as we didn't have enough to punish West Ham in the first half.

 

Everything after that first half was a catastrophe.

Looks a different player when he’s with Italy, I know it’s different being his countrymen, but he’s not given enough time to even create some positive momentum across a series of matches by Howe.

He’s good enough to build your midfield around.

You’ve been watching different games from me  - he really hasn’t this season.  Our midfield was flim-flam with him in it.

 

And again, Longstaff isn’t the highest of bars.  You don’t spend £60m on a midfielder who at best so far may have looked a bit better than Longstaff (again, debatable).

Don't know if Howe doesn't know how to either get him into his team/system or he just doesn't fit. Hence his limited starts, game time and erratic performances. Even before his ban.

 

Circa £55m on him, also £40m on Barnes. The summer 2023 window looks worse by the team sheet.

Tonight? Against City, Chelsea, Everton he was a problem? We are judging a player who either comes on when we are chasing or starting when the whole team looks a mess. Of course hes part of the problem but so are Schar, Pope, Bruno, Gordon, Isak, Longstaff, Joelinton, Willock.

You can't put any blame on Tonali for tonight, surely? Overlooked in favour of Longstaff yet again and then expected to get us out of the clarts in a midfield two with a vaguely shaped shower of shit around him and Bruno on one leg when he's finally introduced.

Complete mystery why you keep going after Barnes; he's been good for us and provides the only really quality attacker that we have 'in depth.' Meanwhile the other two signings you don't mention have established themselves as starters and are regularly two of our best players. 

 

Jury still out on the Tonali signing but it would take someone very optimistic to say anything other than its been a bit of a disaster so far.

He's going to play, it's inevitable. There's just no way Longstaff or anyone but Bruno can do enough to keep him out forever.
