Just need to look at how many games Murphy, Almiron, Fraser and ASM played. The lad would be an upgrade and a cracking addition to the squad and would get plenty of playing time. STM
Barnes always seems to be scoring or assisting whenever I watch him. He will play exactly how Howe will want to play and will effectively gives us depth on the left, in the middle (because it frees up Joelinton) and then on the right if required. He's a really good player. He's just not an exciting player.
54
Barnes is perfect for the way we play, and the setup Howe wants. As much as I love ASM, if we were to sell him for the same price as we buy Barnes, it would make a lot of sense.

Rich
Can't see Murphy going anywhere, even if two wingers come in. He's the ideal "fifth man" in that role, at least for a season.
The Butcher
ASM/Almiron/Fraser oot and Barnes and Chiesa in would be class like. Edited July 7, 2023 by The Butcher
Rich
If Barnes joins, and the interest in Chiesa is legitimate, would people trade Maxi out for him?

I would. Even when ASM is fit he has mainly been a sub, where I think those two players would start. Edited July 7, 2023 by reefatoon
kocunar
Hopefully Barnes is the Barella of July and we actually get Chiesa done in 2 days
Barnes23
Not sure that it can be argued that Barnes is a bad signing, but he has some real limitations to his game. Very much suits counter-attacking football, I don't see him providing the extra bit of craft that we were lacking against low blocks.
STM
Depth: RW: Miggy, Murphy, Gordon RCM: Longstaff, Tonali, Anderson DM: Bruno, Tonali LCM: Willock, Joelinton LW: Maxi, Barnes, Joelinton Gordon, Isak It's better. Still feel that RW spot is plaguing us somewhat. Edited July 7, 2023 by STM

Shak
It's possible that Howe has decided to build the team to continue with this philosophy of concentrating most of our attacking play down the right hand side. If so, a player like Barnes on the left makes a lot of sense as he'd be less expected to be involved in the build up play but would be a real goal threat from that side. Will be interesting to see if Howe goes that way, the moves at LB will tell us a lot. The added advantage of having a LB that doesn't really push on is it will give us more freedom to push both Tonali and Bruno into advanced positions, knowing there's a bit more cover behind. If say Burnley or Sheffield Utd or even an Everton make a 15m+ bid, the club are accepting it IMO. They won't force him out of the door but they would 100% do business. So then the player would have a choice to make. Hang around a club who was willing to sell him or move. On the other hand, I suspect his wages are fairly low and he's another "club" man, who I could see hanging around into his 30s. Over the next 18 months, his time on the pitch of going to become more and more limited though.

Keegans Export
Barnes isn’t exciting in the same way Maxi, Chiesa, Diaby are but he's incredibly productive - 34 goals and 23 assists in four seasons is impressive.
