NUFC Transfer Rumours

Nice new negative spin from him is Isaks contract takes up loads of money. Which all jokes aside I get as its sets a marker on wages for future and for current players wanting to keep pace with top earners but come on we've spent next to nowt in 3 windows.

It’s not just spending on transfers. The cartel put in place you can only have a max of 70% of turnover towards wages. We must be sailing close to that.

What do posters actually expect to read from a journalist probably required to do a piece per day on NUFC as per their contracts?

Always baffles me the grief they get [emoji38]

Back in the day you'd usually see a back page headline and accompanying puff piece about Shola's latest comeback from injury - "IT'S SHO TIME" or "LET'S GET THIS SHO ON THE ROAD" to fill the summer column inches. Bet they were gutted when he left.

Exactly. Wages are just a big of an issue for us along with the huge fees being asked.

One to worry about later it wasn't introduced for the prem in the end.

Like what? What new insight is there ever in football?

Give me an example of what you’d expect?

Regarding @Joelinton7's post just above about the kind of players Howe said we'd target, can they not look into that further.

Maybe find out more about some of these sorts of players the club has scouted over the past season.

And do some articles on those players maybe?! And how they'd fit into the team, and what they'd offer.

Everyday it's some nonsense on Mbeumo, Guehi, Elanga and how were chasing them and it's going to be difficult to sign them.

This is going all the way back to last summer now too.

It's pretty outrageous.

Liverpool won a PL and CL (and loads of other trophies) with this type of player. Yes they had quality but it was based around a physical aggression.

There is a reason why Jordon Henderson was the captain of a CL winning side and yes it had lots of quality, Mane, Salah etc but it had a bedrock of Henderson, Wijnaldum, Fabinho etc, none of which I'd associate with being technical players (it's hard not calling them technical players when they were so good but you get the point).

Do we need more players better on the ball? Absolutely.... but not at the expensive of being to be able to physically impose ourselves on the opposition, which is the foundation of how we play. It's also not something we should be ashamed of.

Edit: Sorry Tron I know you weren't really disputing any of this.

I do think it's doable though, but you are relying on plucking a Mo Salah out of your arse.

Yeah there's a reason why managers like Howe put so much importance on physicality and hard work, it does come before everything else. The extra quality on the ball just gives you that 10-20% extra to unlock the shit sides with the low block like Everton.

I think you misinterpret what the majority of the fanbase actually want from mainstream journalists i.e what their job is

Doing as you describe would probably be reasonably interesting for a minority of fans (I’d read it), but it would also be pretty niche.

I can guarantee after a while most fans would be complaining about them writing articles about ‘players we aren’t even interested in’.

Being a mainstream journalist is about servicing the many, not the few. Despite what we (the few) might think of that.

I see what you mean.

However, it seems they get killed for these sorts of articles they put out, when they have no substance.

But then again, maybe even generating fewm from them is deemed to be worthwhile.

It's really quite unfortunate.

Who were you expecting to not be on the retained list that is?

A good example is probably Waugh’s weekly transfer thing in the Athletic. I very much doubt he personally wants to rehash the same thing over and over, but the Athletic know that’s the kind of article that gets the views. So he’s made to.

You can't understand why we have retained our fourth choice training goalkeeper? Who else were you expecting us not to retain?

Going back to the local journos.

Their livelihoods depend on engagement and transfer stories bring more of that than anything else.

It's therefore almost a requirement to chuck some names out and sensationalise things as much as possible.

It would be refreshing to see some actual journalism now and then though.

Retaining all of them (not that I actually think we will) has next to nothing to do with making new signings though, unless you were super pumped about getting Krul and Foster in.

It doesn't have nothing to do with it because we aren't going to sign players and not have them in the CL squad (4th choice keeper not withstanding)

I think we have 24 first team players, plus Osula who I'm not sure whether he has to be registered or not and Miley who definitely wouldn't have to be.

Only one of those 24 is homegrown (Longstaff) so we can have a squad of 22 I think? Assuming one of the keepers isn't registered that means we've already got one first team players picking up a wage but not being part of the squad and that's without making any signings.

I think McAtee would be a very good signing.

Ticks the age/price/wages/no dickheads/hungry boxes you’d think.

Not seen him playing barring a few minutes TBH. What’s he like?

He’s quite a difficult player to summarise, plays like a 10. Has very good technique and often does impressive things while also messing up incredibly simple things far too often. I think he’s likely to become a really good consistent player with time and for a price under £35m he’d be worth it but I have no idea what he’d go for. I don’t think we should be in for him at £40m or above

This is it for me. They do a clever (well sort of) job of slipping a small piece of truth into a speculative article.

For example, "x player is definitely on Newcastles list" or "x player is someone who interests them", they just leave out the part where they have a list of 50 players or how little someone actually interests them.

The most damning thing is the complete lack of knowledge on foreign targets. That's not because they don't exist (brexit Eddie) it's because they just aren't in the loop.

When there are domestic targets Guehi or when we signed Tino or Hall, they are often getting leaked through the other club. Some local journo at Southampton or wherever tips them off.
