Newcastle United have had two bids that total £75million turned down for James Trafford and João Pedro.

The Times understands an offer of £25million was made by Newcastle to Burnley at the weekend for Trafford, the 22-year-old goalkeeper, and a bid of £50million was made to Brighton & Hove Albion at the start of the week for the forward Pedro.

Newcastle have also had a bid of £45million turned down by Nottingham Forest for the Sweden winger Anthony Elanga.

Burnley insisted that their valuation of more than £30million remains and are awaiting another approach. The newly promoted Premier League club signed the Germany Under-21 goalkeeper Max Weiss for £4.3million on Wednesday.

Newcastle have pursued the former England Under-21 goalkeeper Trafford for more than 12 months and almost signed him last summer, before Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) stopped the deal. It is thought that Newcastle will return with another bid for a player who kept 29 clean sheets in the Championship this season and is Newcastle’s No1 target during this window. There is still some way to go to agree a fee for a player who has been tipped to be England’s next long-term goalkeeper and is keen on a move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle and their head coach Eddie Howe are also keen to add firepower to their squad as they prepare to return to the Champions League next season.

That has resulted in the club once more targeting Pedro, whom they failed to land from Watford three years ago, instead signing Alexander Isak. It appeals that Pedro can play as either a striker or a wide forward and a bid of £50million went in at the start of the week. That bid was also turned down by Brighton. It remains to be seen if Newcastle return with an improved offer for the 23-year-old Brazil player, who has three caps.

Newcastle have not signed a big name first-team player in three transfer windows because of concerns about being in breach of PSR. Indeed, they had to sell Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton at the end of June last year for a combined total of £70million to fend off a potential ten-point deduction.

The forthcoming departures of chief executive Darren Eales and sporting director Paul Mitchell at the end of this month has meant Howe and Andy Howe, the club’s assistant head of recruitment, are now leading the club’s summer spending plans.
