If we don't spend equally large money on a LB & CB then this is a very strange transfer. I'd have him over Maddison, but rather stick with Maxi if it's to see him out the door.

Maxi is brilliant. Ideally we'd get Barnes and another right winger, and Maxi and Gordon would come in depending on fitness/opposition etc.

he’s really not though is he? 1 maybe 2 good games in 38, runs into blind alleys, losses the ball consistently then sits on the floor for 5 minutes, doesn’t score or create chances or goals, he really doesn’t offer much TBH

—————-Isak/Wilson————-—

-Barnes/ASM——Gordon/Almiron/JM

—————--Bruno G————————

-Big Joe/Willock—-Tonali/Longstaff-

-Tierney?—Botman-Schar—Trippier-

not bad. LB (possibly Tierney) & CB now. Not sure we bring in anymore attacking options now.

No matter how many times Maxi’s chance creation stats are posted people still consistently claiming he creates nothing ?

Whatever plan Eddie and the club have for him i’ll be happy but I’d love to see him stay and have a fantastic season just to see the back tracking on here.

If Barnes' strength is the give-and-go then he should score a shitload for us.

Yep, he'd get 12-15 over a season. I think Almiron would get another 6-7 from the other side even if he was still first choice just going by the theory that a monkey would type a novel eventually. If Bruno can get around 8 if he's 'freed up' by Tonali, then the likes of Willock, Joelinton, Gordon & Longstaff get 5-8 each, plus Wilson and Isak, we should be flying.

Some people are saying we should also get a RW in after signing Barnes (i we do sign him). Surely, this won’t leave a lot of cash left for LB (which in my opinion is a priority position to upgrade).

I don’t think we would be selling ASM because we bought Barnes, we would be selling him because we need to trade some pre PIF players to free us up for FFP and him failing to cement a place in Howe’s formation.

My only issue with asm is the combination of how much he changes our style and his injury record.  Every time he comes back we need to adjust to him. When he gets injured it takes us a bit to adjust to be without him. I think everyone else in the team you can swap someone in. They may not be as good but the style remains.

Gordon is similar in terms of poor dribbling and a reliance on a 1-2. Eddie likes that type of football though, that is clear.

i don’t.

We’re desperate for creativity/ vision in the final third now. We’ve got too many predictable wingers in the squad. Maxi is seemingly the only one we have that has that little bit extra “sauce” that can’t be countenanced tactically.

I think this is on the assumption that ASM will be sold. In which case that would fund the new RW.

If ASM isn't going anywhere then I don't see us buying any more wingers.

Almiron, ASM, Gordon and Barnes (with Joelinton also able to play LW and Murphy an option too) is pretty deep in the wide positions. Whether there's enough quality there is a whole other debate but the numbers are adequate.

I wouldn’t say we are desperate like. We scored a shit load of goals last season with the way we play.

ASM only managed to start 12 league games last year though, and the games he does manage to play in he’s all bandaged up like a Pharaoh. It’s difficult to really consider him a first team player.

Barnes or Joelinton on the left is probably the real choice to be made.

Then I’d choose Joelinton to start. ASM to come off the bench. Which I feel he could do consistently over a season.

I just don’t see how Barnes starts for us in the big games.

If this is a squad signing and he’s happy replacing Anderson’s and Ritchie’s minutes then fair enough but you want to be paying nearer £25m if you possibly can.

Same issue in midfield.  Bruno is the only one with that top level cuteness.

Just as a fan of football. More than anything I wanted another player with the sheer ability of Bruno and Isak.  To break a line with a cute pass, drop of the shoulder or quick feet.

Barnes has low dribble success rate. and? It’s just a graph, similar to that xA.

Barnes makes up for it by doing the one thing many people or other wingers find difficult. He puts the ball in the back of the net. Consistently, it would appear. The most important part of the game, and the very thing which wins you games, and the very thing you will be cheering and celebrating him do this season.

We struggled at times to break teams down. Having players like Barnes snd Gordon, Almiron (and I do rate them) who are fairly one-dimensional/ predictable in their approach makes it easier for teams to defend against us.

Not sure ASM would be happy solely being a bench player mind. If we are also relying on Joelinton being our main wide left player then we are another body short in CM.

It’s how Eddie wants it tbf. Interesting to see how it pans out.  He’s almost always been proven correct.

Joelinton played all his best football LW last season.

I disagree, he sure scored more goals as a winger since wingers are more likely to score than CMs, but he is so much better as a CM than a winger. He is your dynamic, aggressive, ball winning midfielder. He even got a call from the Brazilian national team for that role. He literally makes your midfield more dominant of the game.

Look at the best wingers in the world and they all have something in common, they all offer explosiveness and speed to the flanks in order to exploit any spaces there, and let’s be honest, Joelinton didn’t offer that as a winger. He played as a midfielder who drifted wide and near the touchline more than an actual winger. He didn’t make many runs that you’d expect from a winger. This is why Eddie is looking to buy a LW in this window, someone who can offer more dimensions to our gameplay(in case ASM isn’t available). BTW, I was hoping for someone who has more flair than Barnes, but let’s see I guess.

It’s a bit like Darren Bent. A fine 9 in his day that guaranteed goals. I think Barnes is a fine player for a top 5-8 side. But at the highest level, you need a more rounded game.

He’s not hardworking or industrious. Not a passer, creator, not even especially great ball carrier.  But he does score and a good amount. But there’s a reason he’s not really had a look-in for England, his overall game is limited.

I think he’s better/more productive than what we have and he starts for us. And I think he might be able to get 15+ with us which would take him to another level.  And Eddie will make sure he works. But I don’t rate him like that as a player.

Joelinton does make good runs at LW. Better than ASM and Gordon imo. He’s a good ball carrier too.  He’s handy at rounding keepers but generally his finishing is poor and he’s not a cute player.

I expect he’ll compete at CM and compete with Barnes at LW although I hope ASM stays.
