Agreed, but it doesn't seem any less bonkers to me.  I'm a child of the '90s, ultimately :) - top Serie A clubs picking up unwanted PL defenders for decent money just seems crazy to me.

Didn't sound like he was 'unwanted' by the manager.

If anything he was the one pushing to leave.

With all the information you can gather on players nowadays, I'm pretty sure they'll have good reason for targeting him.

A number of decent teams were interested in the summer. He came here largely because of his previous relationship with Howe.

Was clearly expecting a bigger role, but it didn't work out that way, and so he's moved on.

Fuckin' 'ell.

"Fine, welcome Lloyd please do well here, I really wish you didn't come and stayed at home but now you're here, please play your half cast heart out and even though your shit, we believe you can do a good enough job to earn your ticket back to the premier league, the only league your friends and family have heard of."

Kelly only played 301 minutes for us, and we just sold him for a £20m profit, incredible business.

It would be interesting to see what the profit turns out to be, given that his signing on fee would be spread over his contract and would be likely to be paid in full when he leaves

What does an "option to buy" actually mean?

Does it just mean they get first chance to make an offer for the player something?

Usually an agreement to buy at an agreed price (so if a player smashes it the selling club can’t raise the price)

Crazy how many people think free transfers are free.

I don't think anyone does, but I doubt he'll be getting the full whack when he's leaving after 6 months.  His much discussed wage was likely so high because the signing on bonus was spread over his full contract.

If it is structured like this then I don't know what the would mean in terms of PSR profit though

English defenders tend to do well in Italy. Pace of the football is a lot slower

Not going to see a bunch of high pressing and high lines that leave your defenders in far more vulnerable positions.

Like you said too teams don't play at a high pace or tempo and as direct.

Teams are more compact and the defenders get a lot more protection.

Not surprising that defenders coming from the Premier League would find it easier.

Still trying to work this one out. I mean it makes a lot of sense on the face of it, free ffp space who doesn't that? The other side of the coin does require more consideration though. Our age profiles in defence plus contract lengths are concerning. We desperately need attackers but we have what is a ticking time bomb defensively given the ages we have back there.

Regardless of that. I wish him the best and hope he shows his ability with Juve.

PL and the red cartel will be looking at emergency tweaks to the rules so we can't buy free transfers and flip them for pure PSR profit in future!

Anyway, good luck to the lad. Didn't see enough of him to really have much of an opinion of him. Dodgy West Ham performance apart, would he have benefitted from more game time to settle? We'll probably never know. But it's a no-brainer of a deal for me, for a squad player, really.

Botman, Hall and Livramento say hi.  If we get a youngish right sided centre back then we will be very well set.

Selling Lloyd Kelly for £20m is good business even without PSR nonsense.

That's 3. Let's talk about the rest.

It's three of our first choice back 4.  I don't really have an issue with having experienced backup in defence - I'd be more worried if our entire squad was made up of 20 year olds

Yeah they maybe but within the next two years we need the following a right back, a left back 3 centre backs and a keeper.

Good luck to us.
