Lloyd Kelly

Some key bits from the article ...

Fenerbahce manager, José Mourinho, has had a bid for Newcastle United defender Lloyd Kelly rejected by the Premier League club.

Mourinho is understood to have been the main driving force behind the interest in Kelly as he faced the player several times during his time as a manager with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

-------------------------------------------

Telegraph Sport understands that Newcastle were willing to listen to Fenerbahce’s proposal as Kelly is behind both Dan Burn and a fit again Sven Botman in the pecking order for the left-sided centre-back role, but the opening offer was considerably below their valuation of the player.

As things stand, talks have not progressed and the Turkish club would have to significantly raise their offer for the 26-year-old if they are going to resume.

Strange for their vice president or whatever to go public with the talks.

Be surprised if this one happens.

The fact Mourinho is pushing for it might be significant.

However their record signing is around £15 million.

Not sure what we're asking for, but sounds like it might be more than that.

One of the stranger transfer stories to come up. Interesting that we don't appear to have totally dismissed the interest out of hand.

The guy hasn't looked right.

Might be that the injuries have affected him significantly and he's not quite up to it anymore, for what was expected anyway.

Think he'd probably be absolutely fine if he got a bit of a run of games. CB's so rarely get subbed you just don't get any game time unless you're the starter.

If we sell him and make some money then fine, but that just leaves us with a ton of old centre backs, Botman aside.

Could just be that he's not had a run in a settled back line.

Yeah, maybe.

I guess we'll see, but he seems well below his previous level, and hasn't showed the same sort of aggression.

It's weird.

Could a Turkish club afford his supposedly sky high wages?

Pretty much everywhere I look seems to suggest he's on 100k p/w.

I'd imagine he'll settle into being a solid squad player for us but if we could get a decent fee for him I'd be happy to get the quick PSR boost, get a pretty hefty contract off our books and wish him well to be honest.

Bournemouth would have like been asking £25 million plus for him. His stock hasn't fallen that much.

We need to become better at selling, but that doesn't mean we should let clubs take the piss out of us.

Was there even a market for him? Even on a free, there wasn’t a great deal of clubs chasing him.

He’s got everything you need to be a good CB. With a run of games and coaching/ tactical awareness I think he’d be more than useful. He doesn’t look quite at home imo.

Anything under 15M would be poor business other than getting a wage off the books. Unless we can replace like for like with Tomori or close to like for like.
