Ive watched a lot of Valencia this year and cant say Ive noticed any particular weakness to his game, I would say hes a def upgrade on Pope now, let alone what he could potentially become.

No brainer imo

That's good to hear, you can tell pretty quick from watching an actual game whether a keeper's comfortable with the ball at his feet.

I'm not sure the playing out from the back is as much of a priority as we may have thought.

I think the priorities are shot stopping, dealing with/claiming the ball from crosses/set pieces and then getting out to deal with balls in behind the defensive line to cover for our high line when pressing.

Think our play out from the back will largely be as it is, which is pretty risk adverse and more direct when needed.

I wonder if Pope stepped up his footwork practice during his long lay off and it made absolutely no fucking difference so this is the outcome

Can only be down to doubts about Popes shoulder, that £35m would be much better spent on a RW or Wilson replacement.

Do you think long clearances from the goalie is just part of their tactics?

Can’t wait for the “big vili” crack when he joins, will down a treat here, the most homo-erotic of the NUFC forums

I heard Harry Palmer stopped after slipping on a pie in the East Stand.  Saw him a couple of times in Idols

I knew him quite well’ his sister is/was married to one of my mates. He did have mental health issues back in the day, canny lad though, not seen him in years.

That's true, but it would make life a helluva lot easier for us too if we had a keeper at least comfortable kicking the ball. They don't have to be brilliant at it, just comfortable.

I was thinking the same. Pope is still prone to another shoulder injury, and that would be the only reason why we would spend that much on a goalkeeper at this time.

I agree. Be surprised if he isn't better than Pope at least a little bit, as Pope can be pretty poor. Popes body shape and everything, just looks completely wrong when kicking the ball.

This is the transfer I am most hopeful we can pull off, honestly think our GK's are woeful and cost us so many points.

RW and GK are the areas I hope we can strengthen significantly this summer.

Think that's really harsh on Pope.

If he could kick a football he'd be one of the very best on the planet.

Yeah I'm honestly still not sure if we'd even be looking at a big 'keeper signing yet were it not for fears over Pope's shoulder.

I dare say he's saved us a ton more points and games than he's lost us in the 18 months we've enjoyed him.

But we did learn Dubs, who served the club very well for many years, is not at the standard needed - so another GK is required. The decision is do you go for a backup or a starter.

If there’s EC football then there’s enough games for two, one league starter (for me Pope starts first game of season) and one cup specialist and either this guy proves good enough to dislodge Pope next season or is an upgraded backup until he is ready.

You don't spend £35m on a back up keeper.

What would be interesting, is how Pope reacts to us signing a shiny new keeper.

Whether we like it or not, Pope becomes expendable. Not because he's a bad keeper but because he still holds financial value. If a reasonable offer came in and Pope was offered number 1 elsewhere, it's hard to see how that deal wouldn't happen.

We would be in a position where we needed to find a number 2.... presumably late on in the window.

Not sure an overhaul of our goalkeeping department was something I expected this summer.

Pope wouldn't settle for being a number 2 and if Ipswich came in for him (the team he supports) it would be a great move for him and them

You don't spend £40m on a backup right back, except we did.

You don't spent £35m on a backup left back, except we did.

We've proven we're happy to spend big on the right player even if it's with one eye towards the future.

We were paying for potential there. This keeper is already one of the best in La Liga.

Even better then. Wouldn't be surprised if he was being brought into compete with Pope rather than immediately replace him though

Howe rubbished reports of him being unsettled or expendable after the match today, for what it's worth.

By the way if your instructions are 'not to pass it out from the back' then your pass completion is going to be shit.

Absolutely, but I'm sure there are more than 7% of goalkeepers who gets different instructions than pass it out from the back also. That percentage is VERY low regardless. But, it depends on other things aswell, like not having a target man and stuff like that.
