Serie A can still be fascinating but only a few matches and especially if you watch it live and not on TV.

I've often seen foreigners at San Siro during a Milan-Inter game, and they're  stunned by the atmosphere. The same for Roma-Lazio or Genoa-Sampdoria.

I saw an Arsenal vs Tottenham, live, years ago and the atmosphere was disappointing.

we’re buying Thiaw. Deal is a deal, carbonara in the toon. Dm me so we can sort this out.

Years ago, a fan survey was conducted on AC Milan's best players from the 1970s onwards:

1) Baresi

2) Maldini

3) Van Basten

4) Rivera

5) Savicevic

If he had had the character of Boban or Zidane, he would have been ahead of Maldini in the ranking.Even though he played a lot of bad games, in the few good ones he played he showed extraordinary things.

Mad not seeing kaka, weah or sheva in there. Your talent history is generational. Milan were always my second favorite team growing up.

Main thing Serie A has now over the other leagues is real competition. No dominating super teams and there are so many big traditional clubs that there are interesting fixtures basically every week. Smaller teams have way more personality than the small teams in La Liga too, at least for me. Fan culture is the second strength and obviously top class, even on TV. I was in Roma-Lecce couple of seasons ago and the atmosphere was really good even for such a 'boring' fixture and the away fans were amazing.

The top four are untouchable.... Savicevic shouldn't even be in the top 20 in terms of performance but in terms of talent he was ahead of Kaka.

You're absolutely right about that. Small teams die for 90 minutes rather than give up, and every match is tough, but the technical level is very low. The talented and combative Italian national team hasn't been seen in the last 20 years... winning the European Championship was just luck.

Fan culture is the only thing we still have... and that (thank God) will never die because, for centuries, we have always fought each other even if we were 10 km apart..

Something to be treasured fan culture which is dying a slow death in the UK. Be interesting to see with these new stadiums planned in Rome and Milan whether you can keep this.

Out of interest, would you say Thiaw is worst than Botman was when we bought him?

Yes, for me, Botman was (and is) better in every way. Unfortunately for you, the Dutchman is also superior at getting injured; I understand why you needed a CB (or maybe two).

However, the Premier League is a mystery; Kerkez was a decent player (nothing more)in Milan's youth system, and now it seems Liverpool have found their new Roberto Carlos... I remembered Kyle Walker as being great at City, but he came to us and became a ghost (ok, he's 35, but whatever).

Anyway... it's no coincidence that Thiaw played very well with Pioli and now under Allegri (in these few games) and very poorly with Fonseca and Conceicao. Howe will be crucial for him.

I actually like the sound of this.

Thanks for the insight, obviously the market had moved since we bought Botman but I find the point of reference useful tbh.

It's something that goes beyond the stadiums... You're certainly familiar with the Palio or the Calcio Storico, but there are dozens of similar events in Italy, especially in the summer. The Palio di Siena has been going on for 800 years and is still a matter of life and death for the Sienese today. The Calcio Storico Fiorentino is another good example of how traditions can be centuries old without losing their passion.

People certainly don't stab each other like in football, but seeing an 80-year-old Sienese cry like a child because he won or lost the Palio affects me, even though I'm Italian.

Genuinely hope he proves him wrong

I'd be concerned if this was a panic buy, however we've been chasing him for yonks so Howe must know what he's getting.

This. We've wanted him for over a year, presumably to compete for a first-team spot in a top 5/6 team. Age & profile, £35m is about right.
